But the thing is, they don’t actually need to bring Covey up to the 53 man roster for him to be able to play and return punts. They can shuffle him back and forth between the PS and game day activation status as many times as the rules will allow, at which point they probably will activate him fully. The Cowboys are playing the same roster maneuvering game with their backup quarterback at the moment (they only have one QB on the roster), as well as with their kicker (they don’t have one on their active roster). The new rules provide teams with a lot of flexibility in this manner.

My guess is that they’ll simply re-sign Taylor to the 53 if he clears waivers.

We only have 52 on the roster now, so there was no need to release him to create a spot (unless this was done prior to having traded Reagor).  If the latter is the case, then perhaps you're right.  But I seem to recall the news of Reagor hitting the wires before cutting Taylor.  Granted that could be because Reagor was the bigger news story.  But if Reagor was indeed dealt first, then it wouldn't make sense to release Taylor and then immediately try to bring him back.  Guess we shall see how this plays out.

I mentioned the same 3 posts up from yours.  I have a feeling they’ll move Covey up to serve as PR and WR5 (unless they find someone else who has been released).

I hope you're right

That one roster spot remains open.  Maybe they want to wait a few days ... give some guys reps in practice at PR.  If no one steps up and looks decent then fill that spot with someone who has experience (whether that is Covey or someone not on the team currently).

Yes, the news of the trade came first, but I believe the waiver moves needed to correspond and cancel each other out when they happened. So the trade of Reagor could not be used as the corresponding move. It technically came afterwards, putting them at 52 for the time being.

I would think that if they re-sign Taylor, that would suggest that I am right about this.

They probably have to wait the 24 hrs for him to clear waivers first before they can re-sign him too, yes?

Funny that they felt it less risky to pull this maneuver with a recent 3rd rd pick over say one of their UDFA signings (like Jobe ... although I like Jobe quite a bit and if given t he choice would prefer him on the roster over Taylor ... CB is a long-term need, LB not so much).

Yes. I guess the waiver deadline is 4PM this afternoon. Unless it's 5PM.

I might have wrong about Taylor being waived to create the roster spot for Book. According to reports, the Eagles want to bring Taylor back to the PS and plan to use the active roster spot for something else. We'll see.

Yeah that was my initial gut feeling (and that they would likely prefer to use that open roster spot for a returner) ... but like you said, we shall see.

Now confirmed that Taylor has cleared waivers and added to the practice squad.

I struggle to see the point of this, he was a raw project when he was drafted and he's not good enough for the 53 after 2 years of previously making it, what are the chances he advances now?  And if your argument is the starters are better now that sort of emphasizes my point, if he isn't good enough to start after 2 years of coaching and playing in proper games, then he's never going to be good enough and you may as well cut ties altogether.
