In 1791, the new Federal government imposed a tax on all distilled spirits. In western Pennsylvania, where farmers would distill excess crops for a little extra coin, and whiskey was often used as money, this tax was seen a just as bad as the English.

George Washington led 1,300 troops into PA to squash the protests (some violent.)

Washington put down the resistance (much of it from war veterans, who were pissed off that after fighting a war, the government was giving them the shaft.

The tax was repealed in the 1800s while Jefferson was president.
