Eagles' Andre Dillard to miss up to six weeks after undergoing surgery for broken arm, per report

The former first-rounder is currently Philadelphia's backup left tackle

The Eagles kept Andre Dillard rather than auctioning off the former first-round draft pick during final roster cuts. But it turns out they won't have the backup left tackle for the start of 2022 anyway. After breaking his forearm at practice last Thursday, the fourth-year veteran is set to undergo surgery, according to NFL Media, and miss between four to six weeks as a result.

The 26-year-old Dillard was initially thought to have suffered a non-displaced fracture, per Mike Garafolo, meaning a bone cracked in his arm but retained proper alignment. Typically those injuries only require bracing or casting, but Dillard is undergoing a procedure to stabilize his arm, perhaps with a plate and screws. Either way, he figures to be sidelined for at least a month, and is likely to land on injured reserve, which would require at least a four-game absence.

Drafted 22nd overall in 2019, Dillard has started a combined nine games in his two NFL seasons, serving primarily as the No. 2 left tackle. He was set to retain that role this year, sitting behind Jordan Mailata. In his absence, the Eagles are likely to lean on reserve swing tackle Jack Driscoll as emergency depth. The team also has a pair of tackles on its practice squad in Le'Raven Clark and Kayode Awosika.

Um...no. No they can't.

do you know a rule I don't.

With a 4-6 week expected recovery timeline, it only makes sense to place him on IR.  With the new IR rules, he'd be eligible to return as soon as week 5.

This is a blow for sure. I think Dillard did OK in TC and preseason and he's a good back up option. Now we are thin at OT and one injury to Mailata or Lane is really going to hurt.

My understanding of it, which could be outdated, is that you can't 'claim' someone from a PS. You can make an offer and sign them to your active roster, if they accept. So we could make the offer to Peters, but it would be up to him to accept or stay put.

You need to sign them off the PS.  Being on PS doesn't mean a player is on waivers.  Eagles are slightly over the cap, so I doubt this happens.

JP is D-O-N-E.  No reason why we should want to do it.

For a guy that doesn't play, it sure seems Dillard gets hurt a lot.  His body must be built like his mentality (soft).-_-

Looking back at it, that was probably the safest pick we could have made at that time.  2019 really was a crap class overall.  At the top of my wish list was Christian Wilkins who went 13 to Miami.  Bosa was the jewel of that class and was obviously way out of reach.  We weren't going to take a LB so that excluded players like Devin White.  Regardless of how he turned out, Dillard was the smart pick.

I agree, but the guy is a mercenary - for a buck more he'd make the move.

I think most of us were clamoring for Wilkins, but yeah the class overall sucked.  I'd phrase the Dillard pick as more of a "logical pick" vs a smart pick.  More than anything, my biggest gripe about Dillard is (or was, if he truly has changed) his mental softness.  The dude just didn't have what it takes mentally when he got here.  I'm sure it's difficult to assess college prospects' mentality, but missing that was along the lines of how they missed on Danny Watkins.
