October 16, 20204 yr I was recently in New Mexico and Arizona. I was turned onto Rowley Farmhouse Ales by someone I was trading beers with. It's located in Santa Fe and was named the best small brewpub in the US in 2019 at the Great American Beer Festival. Their saisons were very nice! I brought a couple 4-packs home with me as Christmas presents for family.
October 17, 20204 yr My buddy and I are having a beer and NFL get together tomorrow. Going to have some really excellent IPAs including some American Pale Ales.
October 18, 20204 yr Game-day treat. Impending Descent is bourbon-barrel aged Troegenator (double bock). It packs a punch at almost 12%, but it's well hidden behind notes roasted malt, chocolate, and vanilla. The bourbon hangs there as a backdrop for everything else. At that high of an ABV, it's got that "chewy" texture to it that makes it both a beverage and a meal. The only thing that sucks is that it's a $13 beer at the brewery and they don't cut you much slack on a 4-pack, which is the same price as a 12-pack. This is actually from 2018. I plan to pick up some more recent ones and compare them.

October 26, 20204 yr Yesterday was a road trip day. Went with a couple friends to 2 breweries and a restaurant. We had always wanted to go to Brick Farm Tavern in Hopewell, NJ so we decided to make a day of it and hit a couple breweries along the way. Brick Farm is on an 800 acre farm and they are a farm to table restaurant. Also on the property is Sourland Mountain Distillery and Troon Brewing and Brick Farm is the only place you can get Troon beers on draft. Troon is very small production, but they make outstanding Stouts, Sours and IPAs. Our initial plans got changed, so we came up this new route road trip on the fly. We had wanted to go to Imprint Brewing in Hatfield, PA to get some Sours and other beers. They do online sales on Fridays at 3pm then you can pickup Friday night or Sat/Sun afternoon. I was at work Friday and when 3pm came around I had something come up that needed my attention. Upon finishing up and getting online to buy the beers we wanted, in less than a half hour they were sold out. So that put that plan to bed. For the new route our first stop was Axe & Arrow Brewing in the heart of the Rowan University community in Glassboro. My friends still were in the mood for Sours and they had 3 on draft. Outside seating under a big tent, order at the door and they bring it out to you. We had tried a couple of their beers last year at the Witch Craft Festival in Mays Landing and thought they were good. None of these 3 were as good as what we remembered from Witch Craft, but they were OK to pretty good. Then we went to Second Sin Brewing in Bristol, PA. They had a couple Sours that had solid reviews, but we didn't think they were as good as the reviews. Not bad, but didn't meet our expectations. Last stop was Brick Farm. Really nice place set in an old building that probably dates back to the 1800s or even 1700s. They had 3 Troon beers on draft: a Stout, a Sour and a hoppy Pale Ale. Plus they had some Icarus as well. We started off with the Sour, Sesquipedalophobia, to go with our appetizers (the pork empanadas and seared tuna were delicious). It's brewed with raspberry, blackberry, Tahitian vanilla and lactose. It was really good. Exactly what we were hoping for. The next beer up was from a brewery in Seaside Heights, Heavy Reel. Not really familiar with them, but another Sour to try, THYYK: FUNKADELIC PASSIONFRUIT. This was quite good, just not as good as the Troon. But it went well with the chicken entree, which was maybe the most tender chicken I've ever had. For dessert we did carrot cake with some kind of amazing glazed walnut to mix with it and warm chocolate brownie so we got the Troon Stout, Layers Of Darkness, to go with them. It's an Imperial Milk Stout with Sumatran coffee, black walnut, Autumn spices and lactose. Wow. The winner on the day. So F'ing good. Just a great way to cap off a fun day with friends.
October 27, 20204 yr Went to an opening event for a local brewery - they've been brewing for about 2 years now but only selling to-go and at farmer's markets and what not. They had a fall fest Saturday, and actually had a really nice turnout. They grow their own hops, too, so you know you're getting fresh stuff. Their DIPA was fantastic - they had some good sours too. Not usually a fan of sours, but these weren't overly tart, just had a nice flavor.

October 31, 20204 yr A couple IPAs I got to have this week. First is from Marlowe Artisanal Ales, which is one of those breweries that brews their beers at the 12 Percent facility in CT, who in turn distributes their beer for them. Nice partnership for brewers who are good at their craft, but haven't come up with their own brick and mortar location yet. They usually do lower ABV beers that are still big on flavour, but to celebrate their 1st anniversary they did a DIPA, Despite The Odds. Was limited to only 2cs and instead of 16oz 4pks they're 12oz 4pks. Once again they deliver a very tasty beer. Every beer I've gotten from them thus far has been very good, including an ESB they just released recently, which was pretty damn good. That's saying something since while I do enjoy most types of beer, I've really been on an IPA, Stout, Sour, barrel aged beer kick for a while now. So hoppy Pale Ales, IPAs, Stouts and ESBs from Marlowe so far. The next beer is a local one coming from Cape May. They are the #1 selling NJ beer at my store. While they do make some good beers, it is my theory and has been backed by some other coworkers that they sell so well because they have the words "Cape May" on the cans. Around here people think that Cape May is just the most eclectic shore town ever, so if it has the words Cape May on it then it must be super cool and special. They have gotten rather creative lately and are making very solid beers. Their The Bog and The Grove shandy beers are great Summer beers with good flavour yet low ABV so you can crush them all day in the heat. I've had many of each while taking the kayak out on the lake. They canned one this Summer called Crushin It, a DIPA with citrus added. They just release in their tasting room Double Crushed, an orange DIPA that is quadruple hopped and clocks in at 12% ABV. I don't think I've ever had an IPA at that high ABV before. I've had Triple IPAs, but even the highest among them was 11.something%. I was gifted a can of this by one of my really good craft customers who owns the Chik-Fil-A close to my store. Cool guy and loves craft beers, especially IPAs. This is like drinking OJ juice with a little underlining pine/resin dankness for a bit of balance. The 12% is too well hidden. You drink a couple of these too quick then go to get up and you're going to sway a bit. The dankness comes through more as it warms up. Very tasty and definitely a big boy beer. They usually try beers in their tasting room first (like Crushin It) and then it if does really well they can it the next year. So maybe there will be Double Crushed cans next year for distribution.
October 31, 20204 yr I've been hearing about QIPAs here and there after TIPAs became popular a few years ago. I have yet to have one. I don't know if Untappd acknowledges them, either. I wonder if someone has done a Quintuple IPA yet.
November 3, 20204 yr Author Grabbed some Bare Hands Honey Badger tipa and some Maplewood fat pug oatmeal stout
November 4, 20204 yr Just got in the Founders KBS Maple Mackinac Fudge today. It's KBS with Mackinac Fudge coffee with maple syrup added and aged in Bourbon barrels. Didn't really get much maple flavour on it (Toppling Goliath's Mornin' Delight is still the best maple flavoured beer I've ever had), but otherwise was a very good Stout. Typical flavours for the KBS family with a little extra fudgey chocolate flavour. If this had ample maple flavour to it then it'd be banging good. Got 3cs, which was a surprise as the rep didn't even let me know it was coming, so I scooped up a 4pk and will probably cellar at least a couple bottles.
November 4, 20204 yr Happy Halloween, get this beer of you love chocolate and stout... also, many at the bar were doing carbombs with this and peanut butter whiskey
November 5, 20204 yr Haven't had a Duvel in a while. I recall it being a solid Belgian Golden Ale with the usual esters from the Belgian yeast. I have to say that I've been neglecting the real Belgians lately and it might be nice to get reacquainted with some of them. With the cooler months coming it's a good time to sip on a Dubbel, Quad or even a high ABV Golden.
