December 9, 20223 yr Author So politically, I don't know that I see this as a good play for her. My gut tells me a better path would be to beat back whatever too-progressive Democrat tried to primary her in a still slightly-right-of-center-but-more-libertarian-than-conservative state and head into the general with the Dems mostly, even if some begrudgingly, behind her with "anti-progressive" street cred in hand. Unless Dems decide not to nominate someone, which I don't see happening, you may end up with three Senate candidates on the ballot. Republicans will still largely fall in line with whoever ends up on the ballot with an R next to them because they're lemmings, and while many Dems and a few independent-thinking Rs will go for Sinema, I don't know that most of the actual "independents" in AZ will be inclined to break for her. No doubt she knows more about AZ politics than I do, but I think this is a very high-risk play. Assuming this was a political decision, which 90% it was but who knows maybe she actually just felt it was the right thing for her. But AZ Dems who voted for her are going to feel like she is a turncoat who abandoned them.

December 9, 20223 yr Oh look the attention **** does something to try to put the spotlight back on her. Color me shocked. The democrats are better off without her. The can run a good candidate for that seat instead of a self serving grandstander who has had a "for sale" sign out since the moment she got that seat.

I have little faith in democrats running a "good candidate" Sinema is trying to be the next McCain. the independent streak plays well in AZ. better Sinema than giving some loser like Blake Masters an actual shot. switching to Independent I think is more likely to split the left / non-crazy vote to where Masters could win easily in 2024.

Sinema is trying to be McCain but it's obvious to even the most casual political observer that she has no real principles or political beliefs of any kind. McCain always stuck to his guns. Sinema has no guns to stick to. She started out as a far left green party member who basically wanted the government to take over corporations and end free market capitalism, now she doesn't believe corporations should be taxed or regulated in any way whatever. Going through her voting record just makes it obvious that she votes however her corporate doners want her to vote. The electorate is stupid, but they aren't that stupid. They see through that. Democrats ran some fairly decent candidates this cycle, they'll come up with someone.

December 9, 20223 yr What does Sinema's switch mean? Democrats still hold a majority in the Senate, even if it's now 50-49-1. Sinema and Manchin's votes are going to be tenuous anyway. Sanders and King are technically independents that caucus with Democrats. Sinema doesn't really attend caucus meetings now already. So Sinema is going to do what exactly, make herself completely irrelevant for 2 years? Then AZ Democrats will run a primary for her seat in 2024 without an incumbent candidate. AZ Republicans have shown they are bat-sheet crazy. Will they think Sinema will split some hypothetical Arizona Dem/ind. vote and try to go ultra-MAGA? Frankly I think voters are tired of her antics. She has shown she is not to be trusted to serve Arizona, she will vote wherever she thinks power is going to take her. I see Sinema out of Congress in 2 years, but I am sure there is some cushy lobbyist job waiting for her. 8 minutes ago, Gannan said: Democrats ran some fairly decent candidates this cycle, they'll come up with someone. December 9, 20223 yr I mean, she votes with Biden 93% of the time, which is more often than Bernie Sanders. The fact that she calls herself an independent seems pretty irrelevant as long as she doesn't caucus with the Republicans.

That would just hand the seat to the GOP.

They will run an AZ Senate candidate in 2024, and GOP will make sure Sinema gets enough signatures to run as independent. Truth is, she's not very popular. She is just as likely to pull GOP votes as Dem ones.
December 9, 20223 yr Author A lot of candidates end up winning with numbers like that. It makes no sense. But nonetheless is true.
