Dorian Thompson-Robinson (UCLA QB) -- DRAFTED BY CLEVELAND #140

His play style reminds me of our current MVP candidate. I watched him go head-to-head with the current Heisman Trophy winner (and he almost pulled off a spectacular win).

He compiled the highest completion percentage of ANY starting college QB in 2022.

He has steadily improved each year, shows great leadership traits, decision making, creativity and scrambling ability.

He is considered a strong back-up candidate and projected as a day 3 pick.

P.S. I don't think he will last long enough to become Mister Irrelevant of 2023.

No

For a day 3 pick, why not??  Minshew is going to be a free agent after the season ... all we have left on the DC (other than Hurts) is Book (and he is only signed through the end of 2023).  No way am I just handing him the backup spot.  A day 3 pick would be a perfect opportunity to develop a long-term backup.  Only problem is, as of right now, we only have two 7th round picks on day 3 (we traded away our 4, 5, and 6).  I do have a feeling Howie will add more picks during the draft though.

DTR is just one of about a half dozen prospects that appear to be attractive candidates to be groomed as quality backups...a perceived high priority for next season.

Chip Kelly appeared to have brought him along quite well the last few seasons. He also seemed to blend well with RB Charbonnet.

A few others to consider: Bo Nix, KJ Jefferson, Max Duggan, and Clayton Tune.

I feel the Eagles recognize the importance of a move like this in the off-season.

Chip's offense at Oregon made Mariota look like a top 3 prospect, the man can design an offense.  I'd be dubious about this guy as an NFL prospect.  If we were looking for a dual threat backup I'd take Malik Cunningham and hope to get him back to what he was in 2021, if we were looking for a good passer who can run a bit I'd take Hooker if he drops to late day 2 or day 3.

My motive is to find a suitable backup QB subject to anticipated cap limits and overall roster needs for 2023.

When one realizes that at least 56 quarterbacks have suited up as starters this season, it would seem important to have on hand someone that could step in - if the need arises.

A capable veteran would probably cost at least $5M avg. for several years, whereas a day 3 rookie would only average about $1M for 4 years.

My concern with Herndon Hooker is that he just went down with a torn ACL and is about to turn 25 years of age in January. He would wind up on the PUP list, thus not a solution to our needs.

Starter in all 12 games during the regular season ... one of only two FBS QBs to finish the regular season with as many as 25 TD passes and 11 rushing TDs (also Bo Nix, Oregon) ... finished the regular season fourth in the nation in completion percentage (.698) ... ranked sixth nationally in points responsible for (226), eighth in points responsible for per game (18.8), 16th nationally in passing efficiency (156.6), 18th in passing TDs (25) and 21st in total offense (292.8) ... completed the regular season as UCLA's all-time leader in total offense (12,236-only UCLA player to ever record over 12,000 yards), completions (844), total touchdowns (113), touchdown passes (86) and second on the school list in passing yards (10,424) ... named honorable mention All-Pac-12 by the league coaches ... fifth in the Pac-12 in total offense (292.8).

Rather take a flyer on a guy like Devin Leary from NC State as a backup in the mid-late rounds. Same day he could go as early as round 2, but I’m betting he falls into the 4/5 round range.

No problem.

To each his own.

Just that I observed him in a few challenging games recently, and he rose to the occasions. He even reminded me of Jalen Hurts in the manner that he played.

FYI, Devin Leary presently is in the NCAA transfer portal.

Yeah was certain he’d enter the draft. Guess not.

FWIW,  Dorian was at UCLA for 5 years and has about 50 starts under his belt, along with a 9-3 record this year.

If Max Duggan leads TCU over favored UGA (13 1/2 points) next Monday, what will his stock look like?

Currently, he is not on many top 10 QB lists.

Ironically,

Duggan won two national quarterback awards, the Davey O'Brien and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, while earning second-team Associated Press All-America honors and being named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. He started his first three seasons at TCU under a different coaching staff and has 9,241 career passing yards and 71 touchdowns, along with 1,837 rushing yards and 25 rushing scores. Duggan ranks third in TCU history in both career passing touchdowns and touchdowns responsible for (36), while ranking fourth in completion percentage (64.9).

After Sunday's game, and to a lesser degree the Dallas game, I'm looking forward to a more talented backup prospect than either of the current roster candidates (IMHO).

Duggan couldn't hit 50% completion in either of his last 2 college games, no thanks.  There's a reason he's not near the top of the QB lists and that's me speaking as someone who thinks that a lot of the prospects on the lists are hope rather than expectation.

Thanks for pointing that out. It motivated me to dig into "Dug" a little further.

BTW, he had heart surgery lasting 9 hours for an unfortunate birth defect prior to his sophomore season and was back in uniform shortly thereafter. He went on to have 3 more productive seasons. Also, as a freshman, his first TD pass was caught by Jalen Reagor.

The majority of draft evaluations consider him favorably, but not outstanding. Generally, they feel he represents a good candidate for a backup role as a QB. Disturbingly, he was identified as an excellent candidate for the Cowboys to sweep up on day #3. Contingent upon next week's championship matchup, some of these opinions might be subject to revision.

This year he lost his starting role to a transfer QB. He took it very well, and he promised to be "THE BEST BACKUP QUARTERBACK EVER!". in the opening game the starter went out with a season-ending knee injury. The rest is history.

In the brief period that I have become aware of these two QBs, I have seen evidence of determination, competitiveness, creativity, field awareness, athletic, teamwork and leadership abilities.

P.S. I should have been more specific when I started this thread...I only envisioned drafting a competent candidate to be the next backup QB. I fully expect that Minshew will not be back next season. In all probability, the Eagles will want a veteran QB to fill this role, but I would prefer to see a promising talent in this spot versus a washed-up overpaid has-been.

Alright, I’m in. It just makes sense to bring in a backup with a similar skill set to Hurts so you don’t have to completely alter the offense when/if he misses games.

To be clear I don't have an issue with drafting a backup QB, I just think they have to be a lot closer to NFL standard than Duggan is,  he's been flattered by having a genuine freak like Johnston at receiver who could bail him out on throws into coverage.

Again, I appreciate the incite you have provided. If this indeed is the case, our outlook for filling this important role next season could be in deep jeopardy.

Due to both our limited cap space and number of draft picks, we are rather "boxed-in" as to the approaches we can take to satisfy our ongoing needs.

Just how often can you count on a James Bradberry falling in your lap?

What a totally embarrassing mismatch Last night's College Championship was to experience. There was nothing enjoyable whatsoever.  Rather, it was pitiful to watch.

Anyway, short of drafting a QB with our first-round pick, there probably isn't any rookie that could possibly fill the role of a competent backup.

Whomever we sign will represent a longshot, at best.

Needs to fit Sirianni's system.

That's precisely why I suggested DTR.

As I watched and then delved further into his background, the more I felt a casual resemblance to Jalen Hurts.

I had reservations about drafting Hurts in the 2nd round also and look how that has played out.

I like dorian thompson robinson. I live out here in LA and have watched him play live. He would be perfect in our system learning behind Jalen. He is young and can play. Same playing style and same type of RPO offensive system.

If Reagor was catching that explains the below 50% completion rate I guess..

Sounds good. Some washed up garbage veteran QB will be payed what? 10 Mil per year as a backup?

Never made more sense to draft a backup in round 3/4.

Repeatable accuracy seems to be the area that needs improvement...
