Not sure what that has to do with Republicans but ok. No, I haven't. I said that sex trafficking invokes images of acts that are worse than the specific act Gaetz is accused of. NOWHERE did I "brush off" what Gaetz did, that's simply a lie. If that's what you want to get out of what I said so be it.

Good, I was afraid were not together on the heinous train, which is where, as a father of two daughters, I feel is the only reasonable train choice. We cool.
April 14, 20214 yr You keep saying you aren’t but you are. It doesn’t need to be compared to worse situations for some reason - the only thing that does is minimize what he should be accountable for. Don’t be that guy - men sticking together when things Iike that happen are the reason it’s gotten away with. It paints you as being defensive for some reason - like maybe you have an affinity for barely legal porn or something. Just saying that is how it comes across.

April 14, 20214 yr This is taking awhile. With each passing day, it feels more and more likely that this creep is going to walk.

I've tried not to have it come across this way. Nothing in what I've said is intended to give Gaetz any sort of pass for this. The guy is at best a creep and a sleeze, and at worst (based on what we know) a criminal who knowingly engaged with at least one underaged prostitute. My first impulse here frankly was about how the media covers things. I've seen him being compared to Epstein, which to me is a slap in the face of Epstein's victims. The term sex trafficking is complicated and not always well defined. Just look at the wikipedia article on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_trafficking I believe when most people see the term "sex trafficking", this is what they think: A victim is forced, in one of a variety of ways, into a situation of dependency on their trafficker(s) and then used by the trafficker(s) to perform sexual services to customers. To me, I've always made a distinction between sex workers who make a choice and those forced or coerced into it. Where this obviously gets difficult is in minors. I would NEVER argue that soliciting an underage prostitute is in any way "ok" - prosecute the hell out of anyone who commits such an act. According to Federal law, if you're underage the element of coercion or force to compel the act is apparently not required. I find this surprising - not because I think underage prostitution is ok but because it would be classified in this manner. Of COURSE is should be criminal, I just think it's a different type of criminal act.
April 14, 20214 yr I wouldn't be opposed to legalizing prostitution in more states. Two consenting adults, and all that. But I don't know that I could get on board with it being legal at 18. Feels like 21 should be the absolute minimum age there. Maybe even 25.
April 14, 20214 yr I'm of the opinion that old enough to die in the military is old enough for everything else.

I tend to think legalizing and regulating sex work would make it safer for those that engage in it. At minimum it would allow someone who feels like they're in a dangerous situation to be able to call 911 without fear of being themselves arrested. In terms of age, that's tough. It's clear that many 18 year olds are not as developed as we'd like them to be. But we've also as a nation decided 18 is the age of maturity and adulthood. I'm not a fan of the 21 year old age limit on drinking, mainly because of this same inconsistency - you can enlist in the military and die for our country, you're responsible legally for your choices, but you can't have alcohol ...
