February 12, 20232 yr I know a lot has been made of what Covey does and hasn't done. It just seems to me that the strategy on special teams return units here has been to avoid the usual holding and illegal block penalties at the expense of positive returns. In the past, most teams coached their players on how to get away with that stuff and sometimes they did, sometimes they were caught. When you are caught, not only does it nullify a potential good return, but it nets the punting team the additional penalty yardage in field position. Covey ended the year averaging 9.3 yards per return after a strong finish. When you factor in that we had few penalties, overall, it's respectable. He's a little small to break many tackles in the NFL, so the lack of running space opened up by the blocking team makes things more difficult. As FranklinFldEBUpper has repeatedly pointed out in the special teams blog, other teams have been killing us with punt hang time as well. That just means fewer return opportunities.
February 12, 20232 yr Meh put Devonta back there he might break one. Covey is reliable to catch it but the dude has no explosiveness.
February 12, 20232 yr Put Ward back there...if it's close after the half, we can start looking at Davonte.
February 12, 20232 yr I mean he catches it at least but it’s not a huge loss in general. Just better hope that whoever returns punts if he’s out that they can catch it.
