Posted February 15, 20232 yr Let's get it out of the way now... every time a team scores on us or allows a long conversion.... JG wasn't that bad. Maybe JG wasn't the problem. JG had so and so playing way better. I think I rather have JG. Remember when we had all those sacks. Don't get me wrong, I wanted JG gone last year and he was my biggest question mark heading into the season, yes bigger than Hurts. Happy he's gone, I think Lurie/Rossman told him take a HC job if one pops up, better than having "fired by Eagles" on your resume.
February 15, 20232 yr I've been a fan of the Eagles since 1978 and I don't think I've ever wanted a player or coach "gone." I'm just not wired that way. I root for anyone that's wearing Eagles green, for as long as they are. Some guys, like Andy Reid, or Dick Vermeil, heck, even Buddy Ryan, that appreciation never goes away. I wish Gannon the best. I'm not really endeared to him the way I was to Jim Johnson or Bud Carson, but I hope he has a successful career and wins as many games as he can, so long as it's not against the Eagles.
February 15, 20232 yr It would be nice to get an established coordinator that has had a HC gig before and flopped like Spagnuolo. It must be nice for KC to keep their D coord for 5+ years....
February 15, 20232 yr There's no way that Gannon got fired in the offseason. You don't fire a guy who just was the coordinator of a top-5 defense. I agree about him being a question mark. Most competent NFL QBs were able to shred our defense. We're just fortunate that there's very few good QBs in the NFC. I don't know who to blame that on -- is it scheme? Too many soft zone coverages? Personnel? I'm not sure. Since we're about to lose a few guys on the defensive side of the ball I imagine that we're going to find out the answer to that question very quickly. I'm sorry to see Steichen go. I didn't love his playcalling all the time, but he knew when to grind out the victory with the running game and that worked pretty much all year. I hope the new guy keeps the same formula.

I believe that one of the ways you can measure a head coach is by the kind of talent he brings in to be the coordinator. Siri did a tremendous job of that last time and I expect him to hire some young rising stars to fill these positions.

Getting a great D coordinator that stays with the team for a long time? Yeah that would be awful 😂

We are late in the game and I don't think we have much choice but to go with a clever upstart here.
February 15, 20232 yr The guy that made the most sense is Fangio but he is signing with the Dolphins. Maybe Mayo as a young guy but it sounds like he wants to stay with the Pats

Defense gets lit the F up. We should get a refund!

The Sacks were cause we had massive depth on the D-line and and rotations. Along with Reddick. Dude did nothing special. He did nothing to prepare for the Superbowl . Now the eagles can lay claim to having historically the worst defensive performance in Super Bowl History
February 15, 20232 yr The new DC will pass rush four, blitz very little and play a lot of zones. Book it.
February 15, 20232 yr Gannon was horrible and today is a great day for the franchise. He was a terrible DC. The Cardinals after Washington may be the worst run franchise in football for a very long time. Absurd they hired this guy. It is an offensive league and all hires should be on that side of the ball. If you were to consider a DC it would have to be one that is great at his job. I rarely give any credence to those that complain that black dcs can't get hired as head coaches. You don't hire head coaches from that side of the ball any more. This hire is a valid reason to give merit to those who complain. Gannon is a fraud. He is obviously a Dilbert corporate a hole who uses the right phrases talks a good game and knows whos ass to kiss. Bad day for Arizona fans. I would be surprised if Gannon were still there 2 years from now.

February 15, 20232 yr Why is it that everyone can accept that Lurie only wants an offense that is mostly pass happy have a hard time believing that conversely he wants a defense that generally plays more coverage also? I seriously doubt we are going to see a big difference in play calling on defense by the Eagles with this new guy. You aren’t going to see some blitz happy coach replacing Gannon. Why would the Eagles change when what they have done has gotten them to two Super Bowls and they won one of them?

Yeah, I think this is kind of an interesting point and I think it's pretty spot on. There's some notable exceptions to this rule (Belichick), but it seems that most defensively minded coaches don't last long. It'll be interesting to see how Gannon does in AZ, but he isn't our problem anymore.
February 15, 20232 yr JG would have (in all likelihood) been fine returning since he led a dominating defense for the vast majority of the season. He’s a guy (that seemingly) learns from his mistakes. That said, it will be interesting to see what a new coordinator/new set of eyes/strategy/scheming brings to this defense next season.
February 15, 20232 yr Lots of people hated Jim Schwartz and wanted him fired. Then when Gannon sucked with better talent, they said if Schwartz coached this talent they'd dominate, and would have won the Super Bowl. There are some fans who have at times said Billy Davis was better! Fans say all sorts of stupid things. But Gannon sucks and needed to go, hopefully they get someone better.

I was not a fan of Schwartz because of the cushions he gave to receivers. His Dline was amazing though

If you're gonna play this scheme then it is pointless spending money on the secondary. Its pointless to have Bradberry. Slay, CGJ, etc. If you're playing them off like backup reserves. Get some average guys back there. If this is the scheme they want to run they need to invest in LB and D-line.

The washington head coach is a former DC who has been a lousy head coach with horrible offenses his entire career. Can Newton saved him and made him a lot of money. Look at Todd Bolles in Tampa. Great person, excellent DC horrible head coach. The Tenn coach is a good head coach and understand culture and having a super tough physical team but he's never had a good offense. The Bills coach has had success but they have no running game and overly rely on their star QB. He can't develop a complete offense around his QB. All these head coaches came from the defensive side and none has a top offense except for the Bills and that's due to their star QB. I expect rah rah Gannon to flop in AZ
