Slay, CGJ, etc. If you're playing them off like backup reserves. Get some average guys back there. If this is the scheme they want to run they need to invest in LB and D-line. Well while running this same type of scheme the Eagles didn’t really have all pro guys back there. Think about it.

Normally you see great position coaches over achieve with their lack of players, this guy is the opposite. He relied on amazing players bailing his poor scheme out, and an almost unstoppable offense to boot.
February 15, 20232 yr Seems like the media believes the Eagles are hiring in house for both positions. In other words a Fangio/Gannon disciple. Also don’t expect much difference in the style of defenses.

I guess that's partly based on not many chances from a scheme we all really did not like. It's also a little bit from our last SB appearance where big decisions were not made and they kept promoting from within.

Do you recall when Schwartz was still the coordinator and how many of the criticisms of him are remarkably similar to the criticisms of Gannon? Here’s my point. I don’t think it matters if the hire in internal or external. The scheme will remain the same. Do not expect a Wink Martindale guy to come in here with a blitz happy defense. Expect more bend don’t break.

I'd like to see a little more blitzing but actually my bigger issue is the soft coverage. I want to see our corners be a little more physical at the line.

It’s hard to say the Eagles will sway from what they have been doing considering how many playoff wins they have gotten with this style to include two SB appearances and one SB victory.

On defense however I really do think they’d be better off bringing in someone who has experience coordinating a defense previously, someone who has proven they can make adjustments as needed, that know how/when to blitz, someone who will play more press man coverage with the CBs. But I also get the gut feeling we are going to promote from within there too (guessing Dennard Wilson).
February 15, 20232 yr Watch what happens to Gannon's new team. THAT will tell you all you need to know about him.

Same with Zimmer until his last year or so at Minnesota. JG is a long term project at DC. Since there is a huge difference in roles between a DC and a HC, perhaps he is actually better suited for the HC role. But as a DC, he wasn’t ready for that role when he was hired and should have remained a position coach.

Yeah I don’t know about all that nor how anyone could say a project DC will be more than ready to be a HC. Truth is people in the NFL had a lot more respect for JG than the fans and local media. Overall I still maintain this is bigger than JG and I’m thoroughly convinced that the next DC will have a similar philosophy as JG had, because the Eagles believe that style of defensive play is a winning style. Bottom line is don’t expect much of a difference just because the name has changed.

Remember how Sean McDermott was canned by the Eagles for sucking?
February 16, 20232 yr I don't know who they plan to promote, or get as Gannon's replacement, but the defense is going to get gashed again if they don't get a solid LB that can actually cover, and stuff the run. I really hope they don't waste the first pick on DE.

I thought he should have taken over for Kyzir White mid-season.

Maybe JG wasn't the problem. JG had so and so playing way better. I think I rather have JG. Remember when we had all those sacks. Don't get me wrong, I wanted JG gone last year and he was my biggest question mark heading into the season, yes bigger than Hurts. Happy he's gone, I think Lurie/Rossman told him take a HC job if one pops up, better than having "fired by Eagles" on your resume. It wasn't necessarily that former DC Jonathan Gannon was that bad, because the team did make it to the Super Bowl partly because of their defense. The problem that many fans such as myself had was the lack of adjustments and playing overly conservative especially in the second half of games with a lead. I hope GM Howie brings in a great Defensive Coordinator preferably one with experince.
February 16, 20232 yr What about Derek Mason defensive coach for Oklahoma State Univerisity as the new Eagles DC?
February 16, 20232 yr One thing about Howie. He will not make the same mistake twice. Must be seriously pissed about the SB. Team is very close and he also has some draft capital to boot. Anyone would love to come to the Eagles at this point, coach or player.
February 16, 20232 yr even the bad teams we played our defense wasnt very good in those games that shows a lack of adjustment, i mean it wasnt like every game we were holding teams to less than 14 points, i mean yes we had alot of sacks but our defense didnt play like we were just shutting teams down every game especally the lions game, texans game and commanders game, that was a big problem there. if we were shutting teams down like it was nothing then losing gannon was a big loss, i think the management saw that and that's why they didnt try to purse gannon back.
February 17, 20232 yr I think this tells you everything you need to know. Howie straight up left him in the desert 🤣
