No team will want slays huge contract with how his play has declined. Eagles want to cut his salary. Slay said no.Eagles said check around the league and see what you are really worth so slay will then take a pay cut or we will choose to release him. Or he reduces his salary for a team that will trade a 4 or 5 for him

Disappeared second half of the season. Don't mind if he stays but definitely do not extend him

This doesn't read like the Eagles want rid of him.  He wants to remain an Eagle and wants a contract extension per one of the reports.  Sounds like both sides want to make a deal and they just are negotiating.

Plus if Slay is gone then maybe Bradberry is back, and Blankenship is better than Epps so it's not that much doom and gloom, especially if they land a top CB prospect at the #10 pick.

But a lot is going to happen in the next week or so, will be interesting.

Yeah, since reading the initial post and making that response I've seen more about this and agree, it does seem like this could be just a negotiation tactic.  I was mostly out of the loop for a good part of the day ... busy day at work.  Will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

My guess is Slay wants an extension and the Eagles don't want to give it

He doesn't deserve a new contract, they should part ways with him, the draft is loaded with good DBs.

Name the last good DB the Eagles drafted as a day 1 starter.

He needs a new contract since his cap hit is $26M for 2023.  No one is going to trade for a 32 yr old CB who is due significant $.  Have to believe this is just a way to allow him to gauge his worth and hopefully lower expectations so they can agree on a reasonable deal OR they will just release him using a post June 1 designation.

I don't want to extend a 32-yr old beyond a year but it seems like his Pro Bowl season is getting minimized.  He was very good. Sure there might have been an off game or two but he was literally one of the best CBs in the league last season.

Eagles will restructure his contract if he stays. Keep kicking that can down the road. That is what every NFL team does. As the salary cap goes up, old money becomes less valuable and less of an impact on future cap.

Trade Slay and sign Bradberry. An outside the box idea that I think would pay off.

All a matter of opinion. Personally I don’t like this CB class outside of Witherspoon.

I would be concerned if Bradberry would have the same production as his responsibilities would likely be far higher

I find it hard to believe that another team will trade for Slay, his 32 year old butt, and his contract. Am I missing something with that scenario?

So let me get this trade, Bradbury leaves in FA, and We trade Slay and have Zero CB going into next season with any experience. Great plan.

And we may lose CJGJ and Epps. So the ENTIRE Secondary may have to be replaced. YAY!

And they lost the DB/Secondary Coach, so he needs replacing too.

😝

Bradberry benefited greatly by getting everyone's #2 and #3 receivers. Some team is going to pay him a ton.

I'm perfectly fine with getting rid of both.  Just go young and rebuild the defense now with a couple of high picks at CB.

After that disgusting performance in the SB, along with getting lit up by any half-decent QB they faced all season, I'm not in a hurry to pay any of these guys.

The Eagles have a limited number of draft picks, and there is no guarantee that any of them will be as good as Slay.  Getting rid of a known and good asset in order to take a gamble would not be wise.

The odds of finding a CB in the draft to contribute day 1 like Sauce Gardner is rare. Best case is we can develop a starting caliber CB in 2-3 seasons. They would be wise to keep either Slay or Bradberry.

From my perspective Slay isn't very good......and at 17,000,000??  No Way!!

What does what he makes matter to any of us? If he makes 17mil and fits within the cap next season along with bringing in other FA's then who cares? Worried about future years? They could look to restructure again in future and continue kicking the can down the road like every other NFL team. Money this season and next is worth less than future money. And the salary cap continues to go up.

If they can bring back key FA's and still sign other FA's I don't give a crap what each player makes.

Father time is undefeated, and the Eagles simply HAVE to open up Cap Space. Freeing up Slay's money is a must ... it's not an "option" and he's unwilling to move his money around, so the Eagles are caught in a dilemma. At 32 and already showing signs of decline ... his Cap Space is better used elsewhere (i.e./ younger players still in their primes); so, all things considered, moving on from his either through trade or cut seems like the way to go. Right now, the Eagles pretty much have enough cap to simply sign draft picks and a couple of vet minimum contracts. How are we going to replace as many roster spots as we are losing in free agency if we don't move on from Slay's cap killing number?

Slay didn't say he was unwilling. The Eagles don't have a lot of options without extending him further and restructuring the existing years. I don't know if they want to do that. Which only leaves pay cut (no reason for him to accept that) or a trade. Maybe the Eagles extend him a couple years and rework the cap and kick the can down the road and worry about it in another year or two.
