Howie out there playing 4D chess.  Manages to keep Bradberry, release Slay to save money and (hopefully) re-sign CJG.  I didn't expect that.

He also posted something on twitter that he later deleted because he got called out on it.

FWIW, his teammates comments about him.

Eagles plan to release slay reported by John Clark. How does this make any Cap sense?

If he's released with a June 1st it lessens the dead cap this year and saves $17million of cap space, it was pretty much nailed on with his cap number being what it is and I guess he wasn't willing to restructure to a cheaper deal to stay.

He was on some show or podcast saying he wants an extension to help lower his cap hit and get more money overall.

I think letting Slay go is a mistake. Bradberry is a hell of a number 2 corner but doesn’t inspire me as a number 1. Slay was good to stick the offenses number 1 WR.

Wonder if Josiah Scott agrees 😂

He will carry a 13mm dead cap hit next year.....if I am understanding correctly.  But again, who cares.....leave it to Howie.

He didn't follow the team's best receivers he stayed on the left.

Restructure =/= pay cut. He probably wasn't willing to take a pay cut. Players are almost always willing to restructure and lower the cap hit for the current year. They get more guaranteed money in return and lower the cap hit. But this impacts a team for future years. The Eagles already were dealing with 3 void years from Slay due to a previous restructure. They probably weren't that excited to kick the can another 2-3 years for 5-6 years of dead cap impact from Slay after 2023. Maybe the Eagles asked him to take a pay cut.

I think it is spread out over 3 seasons beyond 2023.

It's beyond confusing, which is why in the cap thread I said F it.....let Howie and his team of people that crunch numbers and deal with this on a daily basis deal with it!

Reports he wanted a 3 year deal with more guaranteed money, good luck finding a team willing to do that for a 32 year old corner.

There are lots of teams out there, Slay would be an upgrade for many of them and he will get his money from someone.  Too many NFL GMs that aren't secure in their jobs like Howie is, are on the hot seat to improve their teams, those guys will overpay, make trades, etc.  Slay can live on his name a bit more than his skill at this point as well.  He's still a good corner.

Depends on the game. Against better WRs he would stick with them, especially in 2021. Having Bradberry helped him not have to stick them as much but he would move around the field when needed.

Football is a tough business, but everyone should have saw this coming. There was no way the Eagles were taking on his cap number and he refused to take a pay cut. Yeah he didn’t request a trade, but the Eagles told him to seek one. The writing was on the wall.

I'm not going to rule out a come back since he's so cherished :)

That's what I'm saying. When did they bring Fletch back though was it after June 1?

June is a long time to be without a team... could they re-sign anytime before June 1st if they came to terms?

yes june 1st is just for cap purposes…. has nothing to do with when he can sign anywhere

Interesting... so you're telling me there's still a chance :) <insert dumb and dumber meme here>

FWIW - it's now past 7 p.m. and still no announcement from the team of Slay's release
