The 49ers signing Hargrave was kinda weird

So the 49ers want someone who can help them beat the Chiefs in the SB.

So they signed someone from a defense that just totally got rolled by the Chiefs in the SB....

Yeah, signing an 11 sack Defensive Tackle from the team that handed their ass to them in the playoffs but lost the Superbowl, the dopes.

The 49ers are chasing the eagles, and Nick Bosa just got rolled by the Eagles run game. By your logic, should they cut him?

Actually they want someone who can help them beat the eagles in the NFCCG. So clearly they signed Hargrave to get the Eagles playbook.

All they need is an O-line that can pass block so they can "play with more than 10 guys."

I've never seen a pro team complain as much as them.  I love everyone calling them the Forty-Whiners.  Granted it sucks to lose 4 QBs over the course of a year.  But if you are down to your 3rd string in the playoffs, yeah block better for him.

Not a weird signing at all. Hargrave was arguably our best DL last year but there was no way the Eagles were going to be able to keep all their free agents based on how many guys they had hitting free agency. We are lucky to be able to retain the guys that we did and to get such great value in the draft on defense.

A good team that is well stocked at essentially every position except QB is now stronger at DL.

Not weird at all … Hargrave is a great player.  The forty-whiners are a better team with him.

That game, this season, is the one I'm looking forward to the most. I agree with you about the team complaining. Usually it's the fans, but that team was worse than crying fans. Too bad Ward isn't still there after his comments.

Back to that game --- I mean ... in 2019 we went to the playoffs finally with a healthy Wentz only to see him get concussed on a blatant cheap shot early in the 1st quarter. Then our one and only backup played most of the game on a hamstring torn completely off the bone. The only crying I remember from the team was McCown in the tunnel alone disappointed in himself for letting the team down. Ultimately, we lost a close game with a QB that could barely walk. The 49ers lost a blowout with a QB that could barely throw. The only sack the 49ers' vaunted defense could muster was a run out of bounds by Hurts for a 6 inch loss (which I think was a bad spot). Why couldn't that team keep us from scoring 4 TDs on the ground. Why did one of their biggest crybabies turn the ball over on a fumble?

The stranger thing is Hargrave's production.  Before 2020 he was a ~4 sack per season guy, then all of a sudden he exploded for 7.5 and 11 in the last 2 seasons.

hargrave is not a 20 million dollar tackle , carter is a cheaper , better tackle with a bright future that fell in the teams lap.

Agree with the OP. Anyone who is part of a defense who has a bad performance should be unemployable the next season.

There is a weird structure of his contract (source is https://overthecap.com/player/javon-hargrave/4802 ).  He basically signed a 2 year / $22mil deal with the 9ers.  His cap # is this year is $6.7 mil, next year is $15.475 mil.  The year after that his cap number jumps up to $26.59 mil, BUT the 9ers can cut him and get only $14.5 mil in dead money and $750k cap savings.  Possible that they keep him, but unless he is wildly productive, I don't think he stays there past next year.

Anyhow, yeah, it's nice that Carter is here.  He will have some growing pains, but he's got the potential to be really good.  I wouldn't be shocked if he was DROY.

Do you see that game, because our guys were slipping the whole game. Also many of those guys on that field are still here. There were reports the Chiefs knew about that crappy field much earlier than the Eagles knew so they had a competitive advantage. The Eagles faced the field, the refs, and the Chiefs, and still almost won.

They played the Super Bowl on a Slip N Slide.

Hargraves probably has one more great year of getting to the QB. That’s how you win.

Hargrave was a good player here and deserved to get his pay day. It just wasn't going to be here. SF gets one of the more talented DT's in the league and the Eagles replaced him with arguably the most talented guy in the draft with Carter. Will probably end up being a win-win for both sides, but hopefully the Eagles have their guy for the next 10+ years.

Their eyes are on the Eagles, not the Chiefs.

49ers won't even make it to the NFC Championship game this season.

Truth be told, sacks can be overrated, many times the player getting the sack didn't cause the sack, he got the sack because the QB was running away from a defender right into the arms of the player getting the sack.

For me, Hargrave didn't standout.

He's an upgrade for them but, he's still only 1 player. The scales don't tip in their favor based on him alone. Let the quiche eating pansies have him.

You realize how dumb this logic is, right? Should the Eagles also cut Reddick? He was part of that defense too.

Also the reverse is true. Hargrave also made plays that allowed teammates to get sacks.  The fact of the matter is Hargrave gave offensive lines fits. He earned his pay raise. So did Edwards, Bradberry and CJGJ. The Eagles simply weren't the team that was going to pay his going rate ... let alone all the other guys that were up for new contracts.

I'm excited about Carter. Hopefully he can fill those shoes this season.
