However, also from that draft class ... Fletcher Cox. For some reason McNutt seems much longer ago. Shiiiit let’s bring back Billy McMullen and Darnerian Mccants as well! Lol

The plan was always to get him work in different spots. Sure, if he was ahead of Jurgens at G, he'd start, but he has a lot of growing to do to be where Jurgens is today. Not worried about backup Center. Jurgens is that guy. Someone else will fill in at RG if that happens. It just so happens that Josh Sills has been cleared and is back on our active roster. He impressed last offseason. Opeta was on the team last year and probably won't make this roster. Kelly likely will and brings both experience and versatility for cheap. Oh, by the way ... we have a pretty good O-line coach. They just signed Josh Andrews. They do seem to concerned about interior OL depth. I don't think its clear who the first interior OL is off the bench if there is an injury. Probably Driscoll but with him playing tackle, the 2nd team guards/centres all seem to have been struggling in TC

August 28, 20232 yr Well doesn’t seem like Kelly did enough to stick around here. So it looks like our good o line coach quickly realized this guy isn’t going to cut it so they cut him.

Maybe Kelly helped in that way --- only the coaches really know. But the emergence of Fred Johnson most likely played a large role in Kelly's chances to stick.

Maybe he becomes one of those standby practice squad players. With that being the case our online coach knows what he’s doing. He’s no longer here and that’s is the end.

Driscoll is a lock and now Fred Johnson is a lock. That's 8 OL right there. They still have to decide what young developmental prospects they want to protect out of Good-Jones, Sills, and Opeta. There may be room for 2, but they could decide to only keep just 9 OL on the 53 to begin the season. They may have liked Kelly, but for the bottom end of the roster, it's probably better used on younger guys with upside. We're talking about guys unlikely to be active on game day this season.

Considering the Eagles backup online didn’t have that great of a showing during the preseason and the fact they lost some players from last season’s team it’s more to it than just numbers. Kelly wasn’t good enough to keep a spot. Just because the Eagles are going to need at a certain roster number by Tuesday it doesn’t preclude them from making some moves as well. Howie has been known to throw in a trade out of nowhere for a need. We have also seem this team sign or brining in multiple guys off the street at a position hoping to find anything. If Kelly were good enough then he would still be here. It’s okay that he’s not. He’s not worth trying to defend frankly.

Whatever floats your boat. You need guys in training camp that can help with the practices. You can bring in vets that can play alongside 2nd and 3rd string players with little experience. Hopefully they can help young players learn a few things. Maybe they can even "push" them a little. Experienced vets can help fill in for an injured starter when the team is trying to work on specific situations that a younger guy might botch. It also gives teams a chance to rest some valuable starters a little during camp/practice. I have no idea who really expected Kelly to make the team. I would have been surprised. I'm surprised Fred Johnson did, honestly. But he made the most of an opportunity by not only doing the other things, but by impressing the coaches while he did them. Johnson has started NFL games at LT, RT and G. He has the versatility the Eagles like in their backups. That's why Driscoll will make the team and why Steen is being cross-trained. The writing was on the wall for Kelly the moment they gave F. Johnson the new contract. Was he "good enough?" I guess that depends on your definition. Do we need him? No. Also, there are no "needs" on the offensive line at the moment. I'd be shocked if Howie traded for a lineman on offense or defense.
August 30, 20232 yr Never thought he was going to make the 53-man roster but thought he was being groomed for a spot on the practice squad. I'm not surprised at all that he was released. I would be surprised, however, if he's not added to the PS. Plus, his old number would be available for him now.
September 11, 20232 yr Author Fred Johnson emerged so that's great for us. He might be a decent RT soon. We'll have to wait and see. Teams don't want to commit to paying aging vets for the whole season if they are on opening day roster, so someone will sign him the Giants should today
