Does new handoff rule affect the read option?

Sorry if this has been talked about. I honestly didn't look that hard. Also, I don't fully understand it.  When we do read options Hurts mainly goes sideways with the handoff, right?

Nothing matters behind the line of scrimmage. This is just a clarification of an existing rule. When beyond the LOS, a player can't hand the ball forward to another player (similar to passing the ball forward in the same case).

The rule, if enforced would have affected this play at 14:27 (click "Watch on YouTube" )

"NFL Forward Handoff rule states that the ball can be handed to only an eligible receiver when the carrier is behind the Scrimmage line.

The result of penalty will be 5 yards and replay of downs.

NFL read option 2023 rule will penalize teams handing out a football on a read option. An illegal forward pass will now be a penalty. Previously, NFL read option rule stated quarterbacks can be tackled if they are carrying out a fake. It does not matter if they are not in possession of the ball."

I don't know if it's the wording. Or I'm just simply not understanding.

Not so sure about that.  There isn't a definitive angle that shows the ball behind handed at all.  Could have just been "dropped" and caught by Wes.

Read the quoted part.

It's fine if it's behind the LOS. So it won't affect our play-calling at all. It's only likely to arise as an issue on those end of game desperation plays with multiple exchanges.

A lot of articles adding to the confusion with this one.  The NFL needs to come out with a clarifying statement.

It’s not you. The writer contradicted themself from paragraph to paragraph. A RB is an eligible receiver.

It is the wording, that passage is just a jumble of words and sentences, my guess is they've fed an AI the NFL announcement and it's spat that word salad out. Either that or they got someone who flat doesn't understand football to write it.

"An illegal forward pass will now be a penalty" as opposed to previous years when an illegal forward pass was just a harsh look from the Ref.

Well having read the rule book enough over the years, it all sound like it was written by someone who hasn’t a clue about football.

After reading the official rules... Very 1st line of the rule....

"No player may hand the ball forward except to an eligible receiver who is behind the line of scrimmage."

EXCEPT TO AN ELIGIBLE RECEIVER is the main verbiage.... RB/WR/TE are all eligible. Even lineman are eligible if the refs/teams are notified before a play.

I answered my own question and the rest of you helped. 🤣
