Can’t say I followed Carolina camp Thanks. Mistyped name and position. I liked him in the draft - he is a toolsy guy (size / speed) but very raw and may not quite have the instincts needed. 4th round pick getting cut in Yr 2 - he certainly isn't off to the best start.

Ray Guy was not a good punter. So using him as a plug-in example is a waste of time. Good punters don’t go to the HOF.
September 9, 20232 yr Ray Guy averaged 42.4 yards per punt during his career. If he were punting today, that average would probably have him on the waiver wire. Same with standout kickers of that generation, guys like Jan Stenerud and Pete Gogolak. 70% was pretty good back then, but if you're not hitting 85% nowadays, you're looking for work.

The balls used today and since 1999 are different thent what Ray Guy and kickers used then. Since 1999 the NFL uses K-balls and they are harder and made for optimum performance , so you can't go off the numbers kickers and punters used from back then. Like everything else like the gloves WR's use that allow you and I to make one-handed catches like common place, everything is for the better performance of the game..
September 9, 20232 yr If you only just watched Thursday Night Football, you will understand of what good punting looks like with Townsend and Fox. Both were able to flip the field with booming punts when deep in their own territory. Siposs hardly ever does that. That optimal field of possession is very important. Totally changes momentum of a game. I still hold, Araiza should be picked up as soon his legal troubles clear. Frankly, I don't care if he's not good yet with coffin corner kicks. Just have him boom them. We will not be punting usually, unless it's on our side of the field.

Then Siposs is extremely short, regularly. Fox was the better of the 2, as Lions were backed up more often, and he flipped it effortlessly consistently.

Their are other strong legged punters that can be major factors in wins/losses but Guy drove the point home.. The idea that any position as not important is the epitome of football ignorance. LBs, CBs RBs, and P are not important to Mr. Potato Head, it's like WRs weren't important to AR......until he got one.

If that is the usage of the word, then I agree with you. However, using it absolutely ignores the relative importance of Punter compared to Quarterback (or any other position). That relativity is not terribly important when there is no Salary Cap, but in the NFL there is a Salary Cap, so relativity does come into play. Punter is a relatively unimportant position.

Fox was the better of the 2, as Lions were backed up more often, and he flipped it effortlessly consistently. Here is what I'm calling short. His last punt with 5:16 left in the game and the Chiefs down 21-20. I'm sure you have recorded the game and are used to routinely charting punts, so I'll have to ask you what numbers you got on that punt. Let's compare it to what I got. I got it as the line of scrimmage being the 30 yard line and the ball landing at the Detroit 32 yard line. It was 38 yards in the air (as measured from the line of scrimmage, which is the normal way people calculate). The ball ended up bouncing backwards two yards so it was a net of only 36 yards. But here's the thing that I had an issue with. It's that the punt only had about 3.50 seconds of hangtime. I timed it three times. I got 3.49, 3.50, and 3.49 on my three stopwatch attempts. So let's call it 3.50 seconds. So in a critical fourth quarter moment with his team trailing and needing to flip the field, with his team at around his own 30 yard line, the Chiefs punter uncorked a 38 yard punt with 3.50 hangtime. The last Eagles punt that mattered was remarkably similar. Fourth quarter. Team trailing. Needing to flip the field. From the Eagles 32 yard line. Traveled 38 yards and had a hangtime of 3.54 seconds. It is UNCANNY how similar those two punts were. Yet in your mind, one of those two punts was great whereas the other one was one of the worst punts ever. I'm pretty sure you won't care but I state the facts just to make a point. Have a nice day.

You like to find small off tangent points in my posts and pick at it like it was my main point. Lol. You made a comment that he had a few short horrible punts and I stated his average says 49.4, which indicates he couldn't have had many short punts with such an average. I went with my eyes that both punters had a pretty good game. And the stats overall confirm my bias. These are literally the 2 best punters in the league. Now to bring on Siposs's punt and compare the 2 to make your argument is very silly. I never said that one specific punt was great. Just in total I feel like both punters did a nice job. I don't think I need to chart them to figure that out. It's a good grasp that I have for the game to know that. I do appreciate your charting and efforts tho. Keep up the good work! All because you can keep good stats doesn't necessarily mean you are interpreting them all correctly and know the sport and what you are looking for. BTW, even Siposs has openly admitted he effed up that infamous Superbowl punt. But for some reason, in your expert opinion it was fine!

O-Linemen give up sacks. All Defenders miss tackles. WRs have drops. RBs have fumbles. QBs throw INTs. Kickers miss field goals.

Very true, but just with all positions you want to limit those stinking plays, but we've seen enough stinking punts to dictate getting someone else for the job. But no, Mr. Peanut Head and his analytics goones renders the position not worthy of spending a draft pick on one.
