Promoted for the rest of the season.
The Eagles clearly value consistency and hands over the potential for an explosive return.  That’s the pragmatic view, even if it’s…boring.

He’s solid enough but he’s just not very good. He’s not going to break a big return.

Didn't he have a big return in the super bowl?  Statistically he's been a very good returner for a while after a slow first 6 games last year.  But yes if he fumbles again then it's a problem

Our whole special teams approach is lights off missionary position to functional completion once a week.

Covey is the base model beige Toyota Corolla with fabric upholstery and no options of punt returners, he'll return punts the average distance for the league with very little variation reliably and be dull as ditchwater as he does it.  He has no tricks, the blocking never seems designed to do much more than get him to the 30 if he's lucky.  I saw a punt return on Redzone over the weekend and the returner caaught it at the 15, immediately headed for the outside and got beyond the 35 before the coverage team even got anywhere near him, and I just thought it never looks like the Eagles are even trying to do this, our returns always seem to be straight ahead at the coverage with the blockers in a straight line across the field.

Have we ever even attempted a fake punt under Sirianni?  I was talking about this in a bar over the weekend after someone saw an article saying the Lions were 100% on fake punts since Fipp became their ST coach, and the last Eagles fake special teams play any of us could definitely remember was Elliott throwing a pick when Doug was still coach in about 2019. The number of times we go for 4th and short but we haven't attempted a single fake punt since 2019?

But why?  This guy hasn't learned how to run east and west yet, and just plows right into someone on the kicking team.  Meh

This^^.

Covey is the lead in to a TV timeout.

The Eagles have made it crystal clear that other than long field goal attempts, they're not taking any chances on special teams.

They don’t have any other options.

Didn't Hurts fumble already?  See how silly it is to condemn a player because of a fumble?

Actually, I'd like to see Covey in the slot, I've been saying that since he joined the team, dude will be a nightmare to cover, he should be 3rd down specialist.

He’s not condemning the player because of that, but he’s referencing the OPs original comment about being sure handed. It would be like someone writing the "Hurts never has a turnover” right after he just threw in interception.

I would prefer Boston Scott back there, but I guess the Eagles value him more as their 4th RB!!

Have we ever seen Scott return punts before?

I think "sure-handed" was referring to fielding the punts when talking about a punt returner. Covey's fumble came at the end of a return while he was a ball carrier.

Fortunately the fumble wasn't a turnover. It did seem to affect his confidence later in the game as he refused to field that one punt that bounced and rolled for additional yardage. If we want to see that, we could just put Greg Ward back in there.

Hmmmm now that I think of it, I might be confusing punts with kickoffs. 😝

In any case I don’t think he was trashing Covey not that most think he’s much to talk about.

I see that around league entirely too many times, punts that could have been easily fair caught allowed to hit the ground for an additional 10-20 yards.

That's poor coaching, if it can be fair caught then damn it, fair catch it.  You'll see that multiple times a game by the same returner.

Covey doesn't usually allow that to happen as he understands the importance of just a few yards.

Covey said he hates players who call for fair catches rather than attempt even a short return that can hurt their return average. He likens it to an NBA player refusing to heave the ball toward the basket at the end of a quarter because that would negatively affect their field-goal percentage.

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Britain Covey (41) runs with the ball during an NFL football game against the Miami Dolphins, Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022, in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Covey, for example, passed up a fair catch for a 2-yard return, saying, "You can fall forward for 2 yards. It's better than nothing."

In all, Covey returned two kicks for 13 yards, an average of 6.5 yards per return.

"Nothing bugs me more," Covey said about the basketball player who won't take that length-of-the-court heave. "That’s one of my pet peeves in all of sports. It’ll affect his field goal percentage. That is selfish."

I don't think a fair catch hurts your return average, moreover, one must use good judgement when attempting a return, if a defender is bearing down on you you'd be wise to fair catch it, bang bang plays is when fumbles usually happen on punt returns.
