It's only a debate because we don't know how Elliott's career ends. If he can continue to play at this level for a few more years there should be no question.

Yes.  Elliott has a ring. Akers doesn't.

Akers does have a ring (NFC Championship), it's just not the ring that he wanted and not as big or important as Elliott's ring.

After posting the previous comment, I remembered this from Jake in 2018 after getting his ring:

I love that our scrawny nerdy kickers are the ones to troll our opponents, it makes them even more mad.

Yes.  He could never play again and he's the greatest Eagles K of all time.  And, honestly, he should be pretty damn high on the list for kickers on all teams too.   The ice in his veins runs about as cold as any kicker I've ever seen.  It's truly a waste of everyone's time to burn a TO to ice him.

Even though he has a pair of 61 yarders to his credit, his 59 yarder against Buffalo has to be his most impressive IMO. In heavy rain, and if he misses, we lose, period. His 61 yarder to beat the Giants was great, but if he misses, we go to OT. If he missed the 54 yarder in OT to beat Washington in week 4, OT continues. The kick against Buffalo had all the pressure and in bad weather.

The two greatest kicks of his career IMO based on difficulty and pressure are Buffalo and his 46 yarder in the Super Bowl. He’s 5/5 on kicks in the two Super Bowls.

He clears Akers easily in my opinion. Akers was a great kicker, but Jake’s highlight reel of big kicks is incredible.

I loved Akers, especially how he had the toughness of sticking his neck out to make a hit on a kick return early in his career here, but I definitely agree Jake has surpassed him. What's remarkable about the 46 yarder he hit in the Super Bowl, was until the SF kicker broke the record this past February, that kick set the Super Bowl record for the longest FG made by a rookie kicker, which had also broken the previous record by...Jake Elliott set earlier in the same game.

And if he misses that kick its almost as if the BG strip sack never happened. Pats get ball back down 5 w a chance to win

I agree, and I would NOT get rid of him. But on the flip side of the highlight reel is his lowlight reel of extra point misses. Drives me up the wall!

If Akers didn't miss three field goals against the Packers in the 2010 playoff game, the Eagles probably win. The Packers went on to win the Super Bowl, so who really knows how far we would have gone?

I liked Akers a lot. He was a good kicker. But I also think he's remembered for being better than he actually was.

Yes.

I’d rank Elliott higher than Akers, but it’s a lot closer than most people let on.  Akers was top 10 in NFL FG accuracy in 4 of his 10 seasons with the Eagles, about mid-tier in 3 years, and had 3 down years in a row where his accuracy was near bottom of the league.  Elliott has only been top 10 in accuracy for the past two seasons.  Not that extra points should be a huge consideration, but Elliott is much more prone to brain cramps on extra points than Akers ever was.

What it comes down to is the clutch factor, though — and Elliott is quite a bit more clutch.  It’s hard to remember him missing a really important kick.

Akers also didn't have to kick 33 yard PATs while he was here. That practice started in 2015, and Akers was gone after 2010. Elliott has had all his PATs from the 33 since he's been in the league.

So he was top tier about a third of the time, mid tier about a third of the time, and bottom tier about a third of the time. In other words he was an average kicker for the bulk of his career...who missed two relatively short (41,34) field goals in a playoff game that the Eagles lost (but since Eagles fans liked him they tend to ignore this critical performance.)

I liked Akers but I also know he wasn't as good as his reputation. He had some good years for sure. I'll give him that.

Before the Eagles brought in Tyler Brown as a kicking coach in 2021, Elliott's regular season FG accuracy was 82%.  PATs, 94%.

Since then, FG accuracy is 91%.  PATs, 98%

Oh wow. Great stats and awesome fact.

I will take Jake over Akers. It's close, but Jake has been so clutch recently. And that SB FG. I just about cried when he made that.
