Have more Palestinians or Israelis died in war? Half of Americans don’t know, poll says

About 32,000 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis have been killed since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, marking a casualty ratio of roughly 26 to 1, according to officials from both governments.

But despite this massive disparity, half of Americans do not know which side has had a higher death toll, according to a March 21 poll from the Pew Research Center.

The poll, conducted in February, sampled 12,693 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.5 percentage points.

When asked via a "basic knowledge” multiple choice question whether the death toll was higher among Palestinians or Israelis, 48% of respondents did not select the correct answer.

One-third, 34%, selected "not sure,” while 7% chose "higher among Israelis” and 7% chose "about the same.”

A slim majority of respondents, 52%, correctly reported that more Palestinians have died.

Awareness — or lack thereof — of the war casualties corresponded to opinions about the conflict in a handful of ways, according to the poll.

Firstly, those who did not know the Palestinian death toll was higher were far more likely to decline to answer opinion questions.

Second, those who correctly answered the death toll question were more likely to signal pro-Palestinian views.

For example, among those who were aware of the death toll disparity, 61% had favorable opinions of Palestinians, while 39% of those who were unaware of the disparity had favorable opinions of Palestinians.

Additionally, those who were aware of the death toll breakdown were far more likely to say President Joe Biden is siding with the Israelis too much.

Of those who correctly said more Palestinians have died, 35% said Biden is favoring the Israelis too much, while 15% of those who incorrectly answered the question said Biden is favoring the Israelis too much.

Two other "basic knowledge” questions were posed to respondents: Who is the current prime minister of Israel? And who attacked Israel on Oct. 7?

On these questions, more respondents selected the right answers, with 62% correctly identifying Benjamin Netanyahu as Israel’s prime minister and 80% identifying Hamas as the group that attacked Israel on Oct. 7.

I don’t care about Hamas.  They’re a bunch of zeroes.  I do care about crimes against humanity that are being enabled by the strength and power of the U.S. military.  That’s been my beef from day one.

It’s amazing you can both not care about Hamas and yet care about crimes against humanity. I didn’t think you could top this terrible misfire of an attempted high road: "I don’t want to see innocent women and children killed. Weird position I know” (paraphrased, in case you go full WGB). But you may have succeeded

I broadly support Israel's right to protect itself, but this is just stupid.

Now do Ukraine-Russia.

UN Security Council demands immediate ceasefire in Gaza

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations Security Council on Monday demanded an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages after the United States abstained from the vote.

The remaining 14 council members voted for the resolution, which was proposed by the 10 elected members of the body.

Washington had been averse to the word ceasefire earlier in the nearly six-month-old war in the Gaza Strip and had used its veto power to shield U.S. ally Israel as it retaliated against Hamas for an Oct. 7 attack that Israel says killed 1,200 people.

But amid growing global pressure for a truce in the war that has killed more than 32,000 Palestinians, the U.S. abstained from the vote on Monday to allow the Security Council to demand an immediate ceasefire for the month of Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which ends in two weeks.

It also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. Israel says Hamas took 253 hostages during its Oct. 7 attack.

The Security Council resolution also "emphasizes the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance to and reinforce the protection of civilians in the entire Gaza Strip and reiterates its demand for the lifting of all barriers to the provision of humanitarian assistance at scale."

Israeli army radio reported shortly before the council meeting started that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would cancel a planned delegation to Washington if the U.S. did not veto the resolution.

The U.S. has vetoed three draft council resolutions on the war in Gaza. It has also previously abstained twice, allowing the council to adopt resolutions that aimed to boost aid to Gaza and called for extended pauses in fighting.

Russia and China have also vetoed two U.S. drafted resolutions on the conflict - in October and on Friday.

Too much effort. The final should be a protest march around the campus square. The midterm a cocktail hour.

The final would be a 24-hour take-home paper
