But around 8,000 Gazan civilians dying in this war in collateral damage, with one of the highest combatant to civilian fatality rates in modern war history, that’s a genocide. Am I reading you correctly here? More melanin - more points

Gun to my head I’m probably admitting that’s an impossibility without the existence of Israel. I still think a big part of the problem is U.S. foreign policy, not just Israel’s approach though. as far as presidential candidates go, Biden, while very pro-Israel, understands the need push back against Israeli aggression to a certain extent. While Trump is just looney-tunes pro-Israel no matter what. It’s not a hard choice for me there. Considering that Israel was attacked on literally its first day in existence, I’d say the problem is that they are surrounded by militant groups and nations who’s number 1 goal for the past 75 years has been the destruction of Israel.

Am I reading you correctly here? I’m not an expert on the Geneva Convention stuff, but what’s permissible during war is different than it used to be. I think the part you’re missing though is that Gaza isn’t a nation-state at war with Israel.

April 30, 20241 yr Between liquidation of the Ottoman Empire and May 15, 1948 the area was a British mandate. It’s not really surprising a war broke out when the British left.

PTerp is asking you to make a determination based on today's legal definition of the term genocide by applying that to the US actions in WWII.

Not sure how much you know about military technology, but it’s a lot better now than in the 1940s. Like before you’d drop a whole bunch of bombs in a general area with hopes that one of them would be effective. I don’t think anyone would do that in 2024.

Yeah, but I'm not sure the "surgically excise the bad guys embedded among the civilian population" munitions have been developed yet.

But then Truman decided to drop atomic bombs on two urban areas, so the fire-bombing isn’t even talked about. Truthfully, I think using nuclear weapons on civilians is psychotic. Probably be an unpopular opinion on here, but whatever. Add it to the list… Our military would have literally had to fight women and children in hand to hand combat from house to house and street to street. Not sure if that would have been a better alternative. For a supposed academic you don't seem to have a very strong background in American history. Quote If we are prepared to sacrifice 20 million Japanese lives, victory will be ours! —Adm. Takijiro Onishi, vice chief Japanese naval operations In June 1945, Japan established the "National Volunteer Combat Force,” a civilian paramilitary corps. All males age 15-60 and females 17-40 were required to join. They received training from the army on whatever weapons were available, notably bamboo spears and hand grenades. They were expected to strap explosives to their bodies and throw themselves under advancing U.S. tanks. About 28 million Japanese were subject to conscription under this program.

Like before you’d drop a whole bunch of bombs in a general area with hopes that one of them would be effective. I don’t think anyone would do that in 2024. We dropped bombs on purely civilian areas. There really wasn’t any hope that magically somehow one of those bombs would get swept up in the wind and land on a military base. And yes, military technology has increased. And Israel is using that technology to minimize civilian casualties, hence why this conflict has one of the highest ratios of combatant to civilian fatalities in modern war conflicts, despite the area being a highly densely populated area and the enemy purposefully hiding among civilians and using them as shields.
