I feel a large but specific segment of our population wouldn't support that.

They are doing background checks in NY State to buy ammo now, not check ID but full background checks. I live in PA on the border of New York state and it sure is helping the sporting goods stores in PA. It is pretty easy in PA to get a carry permit but when I was renewing mine last time I witnesses them turning someone down for a permit after the background check. The big problem is that they are not enforcing the gun laws and, in the case of the last mass shooter, just letting people with mental illness go unchecked and unreported. They need to enforce the laws they have now instead of making new laws that criminals will ignore and will not be enforced anyway.
