Here's the thing, I don't watch a lot of college football, but I recall tuning in to a few PS games just to see what's up with the Barkley guy and I wasn't impressed. Truth be told, dude may be the man, as one poster pointed out, Penn State has played well in big games recently and the Giants didn't have much of an offense, the only game Barkley played in that impressed me was against.....that's right, the Eagles. James Franklin is the only college coach in the world that would have a talent like Barkley and instead choose to feature a QB like Trace McSorley. That said, it looks like Howie just did with this signing everything you preached he would never do. On 12/14/2023 at 1:34 PM, EagleVA said: He also need to bring in stronger RBs that will keep the chains moving thus providing rest for the D and better efficiency in red-zone scoring. Every year he passes on strong running RBs, the dude just doesn't understand the game, all he understands is Madden fantasy football......do not like!! You learn the value of a strong run game in Football 101, apparently peanut head has never taken the course. But true, LB (followed by RB) was the position we invested the least in for sure. Most successful teams went that route though. Jordan Hicks wasn’t Howie’s pick. He was drafted the year Howie was banished to the coat closet. Howie gets no credit or criticism (I can be fair) for 2015 draft picks.

He couldn’t do that with the Giants. It will be interesting to see if he returns to form with two pro bowlers on the left side, or if he just continues to have injury issues. actually, his cutting ability / top-end speed has been compromised a bit from the injuries. He's been to the second level untouched quite a few times and unable to out-run the defense since his first ACL tear...He's basically a bigger-framed Swift...don't think we should expect 1800 yards but 15-1600 is certainly doable. He runs decent routes and makes great catches but occasionally his hands turn into bricks...not sure if this move was worth it...could've kept swift and went after a safety...

March 12, 20241 yr Like a few others here, I don't get all the hand wringing about the money. The salary cap went up. It's not your money.

No sheet it's not my money, but there is a cap and you have to sign X amount of guys. RB is a position where teams haven't spent the dollars and it's been highly publicised with the backs coming out last year and complaining. The average running back salary last year was 1.8 mill. The average kicker made 2.196 mill. If you're paying a guy 12 mill that's a fair jump up and you want to make sure it's worth it when you can pay someone in the 4 to 6 range and use some of that cash to bring in some bodies on the defensive side of the ball
March 12, 20241 yr Yes I know Howie is a cap wizard but the two spots he has generally compromised has been the LBer and RB position. I don't think anyone wants to see a Morrow situation again

The issue is the cap is finite and last year our defensive secondary would have struggled against a good college team. We didn't collapse in '23 because we had RB by committee, we lost because from the 49ers game on we couldn't stop opponents. When you boil it down we gave out one of the top contracts at the position in the league and a big chunk of the available loot on a guy that if he were signed last year doesn't move the needle much at all in terms of our record.

I strongly suspect the contracts for all players signed thus far haven't chewed too much into our available cap space and likely won't for 2025 as well. These will be loaded more so for 2026 when I'm sure Howie is banking on further significant increases to the cap and those years will be much more affordable. But he does have a lot of work to do on defense still. Having signed an edge rusher was needed but a legit starting LB and a S are bigger needs. Good thing were only just a shade over 24 hrs into the "legal tampering period" (free agency doesn't officially start until tomorrow).
March 13, 20241 yr Author I read somewhere that a big factor in the Eagles signing Barkely is that Kellen Moore was pushing for it - apparently has a few things in mind.
March 13, 20241 yr Saquon means Hurts does not have to be Superman any more. Can just be himself and get the ball to our playmakers and let them go to work. Moore gets this too which is great. A new day.

The biggest issue..Especially the last season was the O-line at Penn State was awful and the running plays were bland and generic.

It stinks as an admission of previous failure to run the ball, more than a true change in philosophy. Something to please the fans who were holding up the sign RUN last season. (I am one of them). Hate the idea of signing someone so fragile for so much money..wish we would have drafted someone young and healthy who can stay on the field. At the same time..I will enjoy every single high power run that SB performs. Praying for him to stay healthy.
