That was incredibly stupid looking last night. Go back to real football.

I didn't watch ANY pre-season, so last night was my first view of whatever that is that they're doing not. My first thought was:

WTF is that!

They're turning the NFL into little league football.

My thoughts exactly. In my sons pee wee you aren't allowed to rush a kicker on XP, FG or punt. You have to stand at the LOS. Last night reminded me of that.

I wasn't sure what the hell was going on but it seemed dumb

Not surprised teams are still kicking it into the end zone

Horrible. Either go back to an actual kick off or just put the FN ball on the 25 or 30.

Kicker kicks from his own 35. The rest of his teammates line up at the other team's 35. The other team has nine players line up at their own 30. They have to have two players deep. No one (except the returners obviously) can move until the ball lands. Balls kicked into the endzone come out to the thirty. There are a few other elements but that's essentially it.

Shocked that it was you that responded and at your concise description of the new rule. 😉

Unfortunately I made a mistake. Kicking team players line up at the other team's 40 and the other team lines up at their own 35.

If I'm not mistaken, the receiving team, minus 2 players in the return zone, can line up anywhere between the 30 and 35. I think they call that the set up zone.

That is correct.

Now that I've watched it...  I hate it.  Definitely made that aspect of the game much worse.

Such a stupid rule change.  I don't buy for a nanosecond this was aimed at decreasing touchback rate.  I think they had player safety in mind hoping to minimize high speed collisions.  If they really want to focus on player safety how about first making sure field conditions are up to snuff?!?

Agree on the field. It’s comical that they talk about player safety and then have them play on crappy fields. I think they were trying something here and it didn’t work. Next step is auto place on 25 which is fine with me as it makes the game faster

If they truly want to reduce the touchback rate then have the ball placed 10 yards closer to their own end zone for kickoff.

I'm not seeing any returns. I don't see less collisions or injuries. That was the reason the changed the rules. I would go back to what we already had. And I don't want to hear the NFL talk about "player safety." They proved they really don't give a sheeeeiiit about player safety by sending its players to a third world, crime ridden country, to play on a trash field that could have seriously injured the players. THAT is a fact. The NFL cares about $$$, and would like some $$$ from Brazil, England and other countries. Put it back to where it was- it was WAY more exciting than this.

After watching numerous kickoffs, I'd imagine kicking teams are just going to start kicking the ball into the end zone and letting the teams have it at the 30 yard line.  It seems like the receiving team almost always returns it to around the 30 or 35 yard line anyway, so why risk it?

if that's the case they should just get rid of kickoffs altogether.

They could go back to the way it was, and have the kicker kick it from the 30 yard line.  I remember back in the 70s and 80s, kickers very rarely made it to the end zone.  Quite simply, the kickers kick it further today than they once did.

The new kickoff sucks and it looks stupid.

Kickoffs years ago were ok when there was a chance for a decent return. It's been pointless for years. It also adds extra commercial breaks. Just start every team at the 20 when it's their turn.

This was horrendous. Honestly, sometimes I doubt the league's good intentions. Instead of fixing its terrible officiating, every year they come up with something stupider to "fix".

"Hey, nobody cares about illegal formations, but let's make that a priority. No tackle should ever be allowed to lineup 1 inch apart from the LOS"

So far I haven’t seen the impact in a positive way. I think it needs a few trials to appreciate the nuances, but so far early no real impacts.

Right. They call that stupid stuff, but linemen are held on pretty much every play, they're inconsistent with pass interference and roughing the passer. Just clean up calling the game as is.

There still isn’t enough incentive to not just kick it into the endzone. Make a touchback the 40 yard line and you’ll see more returns. Or have the kickers back up more.
