People will say DeJean can handle the PR duties and they're right. But the same people will begin to say, "we need a PR so DeJean isn't risking injury..." soon. Ainias Smith was supposed to compete there as well last season, but as of the end of the season, I'd rather Covey on the roster over him. Dotson had some explosive returns in college. Maybe they want to get him involved there. I still believe Covey was the best at it over anybody currently on the roster.

Covey was reliable/sure handed and also managed to pick up decent return yardage. Maybe this is part of the strategy of going with cheaper options (as that seemed to be a major focus this offseason to mitigate the cap). So I do think Smith will get a good look there. And they also signed a UDFA that is a decent PR (WR Taylor Morin). This is what Tommy Lawlor had to say about him::WR Taylor Morin – Wake Forest – 5-10, 188Highly productive slot receiver and return specialist. Holds the record for the most receiving yards in a career at Wake Forest with 2,974. His 21 receiving touchdowns in his career ranks tied for fourth in program history. Ranks second all-time in career receptions with 227, only two catches shy of the program record. Ranks second all-time in career punt return yards in program history with 809.Good Pro Day: 4.49 in the 40, 37 VJ, 6.70 in the SS. That shows speed, agility and explosion. You see that athleticism when you watch him play.Morin is the classic slot receiver. He does a great job of working the middle of the field. He’s comfortable playing in traffic. Has the skills to get open with quick cuts. Good hands. Outstanding with the ball in his hands, as a receiver or returner. He’s both elusive and fast. Morin will compete with Ainias Smith and Avery Williams for a spot as the RS and role player on offense.http://igglesblitz.com/2025/04/2025-udfas/

So we probably didn't really save anything noteworthy. Besides being relatively sure-handed, what I really liked about Covey was his production. All teams would see a net gain if their punt returners always just took what was there instead of running sideways. Very few PRs understand this. Covey did. Greg Ward was sure handed, but he didn't do anything with the ball and often chose to let the punt hit the ground and roll for additional yardage. In a game like football, 2 or 3 more yards could be the difference on a long FG attempt. Nobody is irreplaceable and, like I said, DeJean is more than capable if nobody else can win the job. It might be hard for a prospect like Morin to make the 53 man roster, so even if we get him on the PS, that's 3 elevations before we have to let him go or whatever. I'm just trying to understand what factors were involved with not at least bringing Britain back to compete. Maybe they weren't comfortable with something regarding last season's injury. Or they could just be very confident in the mix of A. Smith, DeJean, and Dotson, all of whom are likely to make the final 53 already.
