March 31, 20214 yr So what do you guys recommend for whiskey tasting? Do just buy random bottles and hope for the best? There’s so many options out there it’s impossible to know what to look for, at least for me.
April 1, 20214 yr do you want to start with bourbon? thats the most approachable and can get various bottles around 30 bucks to start Four Roses Small Batch, Elijah Craig Small Batch, Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace start with those 4 from big distilleries and see what you like.
April 1, 20214 yr Should have put 1792 on that list as well scored a Caribou Crossing today. First one ever

I’m generally not picky and by no means a "snob” when it comes To this 😂 I’m more curious on how you guys all pick and choose without the ability to taste test. Like beer is beer for me, and generally even the most expensive beers are worth just giving them a shot randomly. I can go into almost any bar and say just give me an IPA and I’m good. But whiskey and bourbon are obviously way different and more expensive experiments 😆
April 1, 20214 yr Lots of shops out here will let you taste test ive tried some duds that i regretted buying. Thats life over time you get to know which distilleries suit your palate. I love BT and four roses. Heaven hill less so. Woodford is meh to me

I’ve seen them set up kiosks in total wine stores down here but with covid that hasn’t happened for a long time.
April 3, 20214 yr Picked this up on a whim, as it seems to be considered 'old reliable' by many. I'm kind of a sucker for labelling and presentation, so this always caught my eye when I saw it behind a bar. I've been on a rye kick lately (they often seem to have the extra bit of character that I seek), but I do enjoy a good bourbon. Pleasant mix of vanilla, honey, and spice on a bed of oak. Long finish. I can't believe it took me this long, because this is great value!
April 5, 20214 yr Anyone had this? Sounds delightful... https://www.breakingbourbon.com/review/sazerac-18-year-rye-2014-release
April 6, 20214 yr redwood empire is interesting. Sourcing but aging in CA i think the monarch mix of rye and bourbon is nice for only 36 bucks. Makes a mean manhattan
April 6, 20214 yr Thanks, I'll keep them in mind. You definitely weren't kidding on the Sazerac. So, how do you get these limited-production whiskeys at MSRP? Do you have to go to a release at the distillery?
April 6, 20214 yr Lotto usually thats pary of the annual BTAC release ive had a 12yr lot B and a TH Handy rye ingot at msrp. The rye was stellar
April 6, 20214 yr Author This is purely a teaser. This is Smoke Wagon Rare & Limited Elevator Batch. Two bottles out of 1649, #s 5 and 30. Just arrived. I just looked online and the cheapest price, for ones that were actually available, was $1K. They only cost us a fraction of that, but there's a good chance these 2 end up being sent to our other store where they have more than enough customers willing to pay that. It hurts my soul to be able to touch them yet know I won't be able to taste them. Unless I win the lottery this week.

They didn't think people would buy a "premium" bourbon by Jim Beam so they created Basil, and they make Knob Creek too.

I haven't drank Jim Beam in forever, probably out of a red solo cup with coke at a college party, lol. I did know this was basically Jim Beam's small batch, though. I'd think this one at least has a little more character and less edge. You have me curious to do a side-by-side comparison but then, you know, I'd have to buy Jim Beam
April 7, 20214 yr Bakers is a Beam product too and its great. Better than Blantons imho and i love BT stuff
