Castle and key batch 5 is pretty nice

My grandfather passed away several months ago and while getting his belongings all gathered up we found a bunch of whiskey from as far back as the 70s, maybe earlier.  He was not a drinker so we think they were just gift bottles he never opened.

Actually a few bottles were already opened, I tried to filter and bottle them but it didn't work out. Just straight alcohol and little taste so I think Im going to have to pour them out.  Three of these were the Ezra Brooks VFW one, Wild Turkey (shaped like a turkey from '76), and the John Henry one which was disappointing because its just a badass bottle.

The rest you see are unopened, and Ive got about double this amount.  So for some reason I feel the need to catalogue them.

Ive done some googling and you can semi-date them by the label. For example at some point the IRS stopped labeling them, so if you see the IRS on the label along with some other details, like on that Fleischmann bottle, you know its between '61-'77.

I'll try to get some photos of the others if anyone is interested.

I had just had Buffalo Trace on a Frontier flight to Vegas. That really surprised me. Are they making more of it these days?

BT has been expanding for years. Regular BT is always a good safe choice. Barrel picks of it can be great low cost bottles

Yeah, it’s great value. Still sells out at store opening at my local county stores though. From what I hear it’s relatively easy to get in PA.

Got a bottle of Blue Run Reflection I and Barrell  Armida.

Have to find some extra bottles for my long term collection before I open them though.

The reflection is a disappointment

Not whisky but got some australian rum as a gift. I dont know rum well so what could possibly go wrong…

So I just got into Manhattans. Had a few before the game last night with woodsford rye. What others are good in a Manhattan?

Never have made a Manhattan myself, but I like Pikesville in old fashioneds if I really want to make a nice one.

Tried out a swedish corn whisky called Hven

its interesting, sweet and reminds  me a bit of some japanese whiskey

depends on what vermouth imho

some are sweeter than others. i like Antica but its pretty sweet so i need something higher rye to balance it and i tend to short the vermouth

Opened a 1792 Fp pick

Poured some Blanton's tonight with a cigar. Figured I'd celebrate shooting a doe this morning. Saving the ER17 for a buck

We killed a blantons to celebrate the kid’s golf team winning their title

My thoughts exactly. I figured if I made it a "special occasion" drink it'll make me appreciate it more.

Couple of dads got hammered

friggen lightweights

A buddy was over to watch the game last night. We had a couple beers, as per usual, but he surprisingly asked me for a little whiskey before he left. I broke out the Boxergrail for the first time in awhile and realized I'd forgotten just how nice it is. Quite right for the price.
