You can really detect the charcoal there, along with maybe some undertones of honey and caramel, chocolate, and dried fruit/citrus. Oak is present but not forceful. On the palate, orange with rye for dayssss...that is one spicy boi! There are some nice secondary and tertiary complements of pf an herbal anise, clove, honey. Great mouthfeel with a good weight to it, kind of coats your tongue. Finish pleasantly lingers, and the 114 proof really shows here 🔥 This a real treat with good depth of character, but it takes a bit of study to pin it down. There's an elusive quality to the profile that keeps you coming back. Highly (dangerously) drinkable at this proof. Only 3,000 cases...might grab another one to put in storage while I can still get it at MSRP. It's going pretty quickly in PA but can still be found in the Philly area 🤫 Lovely dram, thanks for the tip! Cheers!
January 13, 20232 yr I’ve been lazy and buying premixed old fashioned. Bulleit has one that’s really good!

The fruit profile really makes it special imho. Ive had people say everything from tropical fruit to grape jelly. Its different but in a great way. So much blah out there now. and yes easily drinkable at barrel proof which is a real testament to quality

I can find the 99, and from what I hear, that's going to be their new "entry level". Which is cool, I love the 99, but the 90 holds a sentimental value to me. My late buddy Joe and I used to do guys night every few weeks and that's what we would drink. I need to get a bottle now just to hang onto

February 7, 20232 yr Question for the whiskey drinkers, since I'm not one. Got a buddy that I wanna gift a bottle to for his birthday - not looking to spend more than like $50. What are some good options in that price range that I can easily find in PA?

What are some good options in that price range that I can easily find in PA? if he likes rye, micthers rye is $50 and one of my favorites. also, high west double rye is around that price range and fantastic. if he likes higher proof, wild turkey rare breed is around $40 and probably my favorite easy to find bottle. for something thats not as hot though, maybe woodford double oak (though that might be just over $50), four roses small batch ($35ish) or single barrel ($45) or even Makers 46 ($40)

My suggestion would be Basil Hayden for that price point. That's my favorite go to and it runs about $45/bottle. This one has been my new favorite gem recently and was recommended to me by the liquor store owner. It does not disappoint and also runs about $45/bottle.

If you want to get him something special, your best bang for buck is going to be a barrel select — basically a store gets to pick their own barrel from the distillery to bottle from a range of like 5-7 different barrels. So not only is it going to be really good because they pick the best of the bunch, but it’s exclusive/rare. They’re usually around $50 and some of them blow the socks off of big names. I’ve had a lot of success with Makers Mark selects. Really, really great value. If you live in the Philly area/near the Delaware, PM me and give you some of my honey pot stores.
