It's an ever expanding behemoth because we've had nothing but legislators that pass spending bills, and presidents that sign those spending bills, that spend more and more of our money that we don't have. The last time Trump was president, he promised to completely erase the national debt, not the deficit, the entire debt. And then what happened in reality is that under his leadership, the deficit skyrocketed, and that was before COVID hit. But this is awesome, Trump isn't even president yet, and he's about to have a republican congress, and Trumpers are already moving the goalposts from "Trump is going to make massive cuts to the bureaucracy and fix the budget!" to "ok we're still going to run trillion dollar deficits every year, but it will be slightly less."
