Most would likely assume this is another Barkley thread.  Nope!

Not just highest graded player on offense for the Eagles but for the entire league!  :flex:

Should be All-pro this year for sure.

Still can’t believe he’d never played the sport until 6 years ago.

What an incredible story he is! From never having put on pads and a helmet to arguably the best LT if not OT in the NFL.

Let's also not forget his heart disorder that 10 years ago required two surgeries to repair it. I'm not sure if it 'almost killed' him, but I do know that he passed out at one point while he was playing rugby and that's what brought it to their attention and sent him into emergency surgery.

That kind of thing would sideline most people from rigorous activities permanently, but look at him today. Quite amazing, from the outside looking in.

PFF has him as the highest rated player at any position on offense … not just OT (or OL).  That’s absolutely amazing considering all of the immensely talented offensive players there are.

I didn’t know that! Must have missed that report when it came out. Yeah I mean that makes it even more incredible then! What a player and what a guy.

Yeah sorry I’m not disputing that I’m just saying there would still be a debate to be had as to whether he’s the best LT or OT in football despite that rating.

Yeah, that happened when he was 17 or 18. I can only imagine how terrified his parents were  at the time.

Got a better player in the 7th round than Dallas got the entire draft of a draft held in Dallas. Right after a SB title no less.

233rd pick of that draft. My goodness. The grace of a ballerina and the strength of a grizzly bear. What a find.

@EaglePhan1986 thinks he's overrated by everyone.  But he also phists himself while holding one of those handshake buzzers.  So there's that.

After BG, he's easily my favorite current player. We've been very lucky at LT over the past 2 decades.

I’ll punch you in your mangina with my buzzer… and not in the fun kind of way you do with @mikemack8

Also can’t say that I knew this part of the story!! I just always like him because my supervisor at the time was from South Africa and really into rugby so it gave me something to talk about with him.

This is from an article in January 2023, it doesn't say much but it names the condition.

Quote

Rising rugby league star

A junior with the Bankstown Bulls, which produced current NRL stars Ryan Matterson and Daniel Tupou, the massive Mailata was quickly earmarked for higher honours.

Weighing in at 147kg despite his tender age, Mailata caught the eye of Bulldogs scouts as a prop, and joined their elite SG Ball (under-18s) program in 2014.

Then tragedy very nearly struck.

The hulking prop collapsed at preseason training just a week out from his debut, and was rushed to hospital.

Mailata was eventually diagnosed with a heart condition called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, and had to have surgery on his heart the follow year, halting his rugby league dream for more than 18 months.

As he recovered, his already hulking 203cm frame blew out to 166kg, meaning he needed to go back to the drawing board if he was to keep playing footy.

My god that’s both terrifying and incredible! What a testament to his attitude and mentality to come back from that. And then to come back from that, play professional rugby and then switch sports and start all over again.

Closer to 3 decades at this point… Tra Thomas > Jason Peters > Mailata.  Crazy.
