VanHammersly Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Since there's been an unprecedented amount of Republicans publicly endorsing Biden, seemed like we should have a place to put them all. Here's a few. I realize that a lot of these defections are one-time only and specific only to Trump opposition, but you have to wonder about the long term implications of a mass exodus like this. Does this kind of reordering have longterm implications on the construction of the two parties? Does it lead to a new party, as the more progressive wing of the Dems break off if Biden wins? Also, what's the biggest fish as far as Republicans for Biden are concerned? Is there any chance Romney formally endorses Biden?
VanHammersly Posted September 3, 2020 Author Posted September 3, 2020 In this same vein, this is a surprisingly low number for Trump. He's pandered to his base every day for 4 years. He should really have this number in the mid-nineties.
mayanh8 Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Can't understate how much of a self own the "vote twice" moment was for Trump. Now there are going to be local officials all over local news reinforcing the idea that Trump is a complete moron in a state he absolutely can't afford to bleed one iota of support from. 3

toolg Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Here's the list of Republicans endorsing Biden from DNC week: So I think what we are seeing is Republicans and conservatives who want to save the party from Trumpism. It's not an exodus, they don't want a new party. They want the old party back. They'd rather see Biden win 2020 to make a challenge in 2024 with a sane GOP nominee, then have to see Trump bring down the party for another 4 years. The only way to defeat Trump is at the ballot box. But there are still a significant number of Republicans who support Trump. And there's a third group, Republicans who just suck up to who's in charge (politicians like Lady G, Ted Cruz, etc). So we'll see how they navigate that. There's certainly a split forming in the Republican party machine, but I am unsure how it affects voters. They tend to dislike politicians in general, so they might continue to support Trump shaking things up. November 3 will be a reckoning for the Republican party, one way or the other. 2

VanHammersly Posted September 3, 2020 Author Posted September 3, 2020 So, does anyone think Romney pulls the trigger and endorses Biden? If he reads the tea leaves and thinks Trump's going to lose, it would be a pretty wise decision to get out in front of it. Because the minute Trump goes down, there's going to be an immediate turn from a HUGE number of Republicans pointing fingers at his entire brand.

A lot of Republicans are just tired of the sheet storm that Trump brings to the table. I think many would like to see the days of the parties working together, and bending on some issues for the better of Americans. I think Obama’s presidency started the fallout, and then Trump’s just took it to a whole other level. 3
The Norseman Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Surprising, the number of party line jumpers I agree. I think much of this has to do with the fact that Trump is really a populist, not a true Republican. I mean, he was a registered Independent and a registered Democrat in the past. We all know that he'll burn anyone who stands in his way and that makes for defectors. I'm sure this also has something to do with these Republican's constituencies making it clear that they don't like Trump and won't support anyone who backs him. Typically though, this type of party defection comes back to haunt the candidates when they run for reelection. Will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Most of the one's that have backed Biden aren't in public office right now, so they're not held to their constituency's demands.

Not if he feels he wants to continue in politics as a Republican. It's one thing to vote against your party. Endorsing a candidate from the other party is a whole other ballgame. 1

His anti-Trump credentials are already well established to make him a party leader in the cleanup if Trump loses. 5

The left did it’s part putting up Biden (as opposed to loonies like Bernie and Warren). Now it’s time for the right to get rid of their idiot lunatic, and hopefully by 2024 - we can get back to normal 2

Also, Eisenhower was recruited by both parties.

If the Dems put up AOC in 2024 or any other year, what should happen is the voters deservedly **** slapping the f out of them at the polls (like California and New York turning red) to teach them a lesson of never going down that idiotic path again. On that note, and it won’t happen, but Texas turning blue would be the best thing this election for the country moving forward so that we can all collectively learn that someone like Trump should never come out of the primaries ever again. 1
