The republicans would do well to turn to Romney as the leader of the post Trump gop. However, they’re republicans and they’re idiots so they will instead go with some total whack job. Probably the Q anon lady.

Romney 2024 - that would be a Fing dream!

I think Romney is done as a presidential candidate. He didn’t kiss the ring so at least half of the party will hate him forever. Even though he’d pull a lot of independents I can’t see him winning a national election without strong support from his own party.

Romney would have no chance in a republican primary. He'd be the first one out, even before Iowa. The republicans are about guns, and putting gay people, brown people, and black people in their place, along with no abortions for anyone ever. That's pretty much all they care about. Romney is way too smart and way too sane to appeal to republican primary voters. If they are ever done with the Trumps, they will move on to someone even crazier and even more racist. The 2024 field will have one or more Trumps (Ivanka and Don JR I suspect), the Q anon lady in congress, Richard Spencer, Mike Pence (who also has no shot despite checking off the "putting gay people in their place" box in a big way), then some dark horse candidate like  Glenn Grothman. Who is Glenn Grothman you ask? Representative from Wisconsin. Some of his classic quotes...

Quote

Martin Luther King Day "is an insult to all the other taxpayers" who want to contact government offices.

"almost no black people today care about Kwanzaajust white left-wingers who try to shove this down black people’s throats in an effort to divide Americans."

"Did people even know what homosexuality was in high school in 1975? I don’t remember any discussion about that at the time."

This is all just speculative of course. Should Trump somehow win, he will run again in 2024, and the republicans will cancel their primaries again. Even if he loses, there's still an outside shot that he runs again in 2024, but losing would break some of the cult like hold he has on the gop.

It’s super depressing, but I think racist populism might be around for awhile.

I liked Romney a lot the last time around and still do.  The problem is that I think the Republican party has changed a lot under Trump.  Not wanting to get into foreign wars, pro protectionism, negotiating with foreign advisories, etc, etc.  I think a lot of those principals will stick now for better or worse.  If so, I don't think there is a place for old guard Republicans anymore.

I hope it is a split into one or more parties that have legit money behind them. This Trump experiment is going to have long lasting effects on the political scene

I would like that too, only, I think a split into multiple parties would just deliver elections to Democrats for the foreseeable future.  Sadly, we need the Christian right just as democrats need the socialists in order to garner enough votes to compete on the national scale.

but you're afraid of a bettter option because ......lib.

all i have ever said of Biden and Harris is that i view them as relatively harmless. they are traditional pols.

Pelosi, Schumer, etc are far more dangerous to the country's long term success due to the unamerican socialist garbage they push.

So long as the GOP hold the Senate, we can get a nice calm 2 years of stalemate. which would be a vast improvement

This is becoming less and less likely with each passing day of rage tweeting embarrassment. I would love to see Biden + GOP Senate. But as Trump circles the drain, he is taking the party with him. They need to break with him soon.

yeah how long do they stay on a sinking ship ? jump into one of the 1st available life boats, or play it out like the string quartet ?

There have been rumors/stories of McConnell looking to hold the line until Labor Day. The next couple weeks should be interesting for those Senators in tough races.

even if the senate ends up 50-50 or 51D-49R you've got a handful of democratic senators like Joe Manchin and Jon Tester who are actually willing to break with Democrats when they go too far left.

I'm for punishing the hell out of a party that gave us Trump. push them out to the wilderness so they can figure their ish out and get back to basics.

The dems and hillary gave us trump as much or more than anyone...

Will be interesting to watch

i dont think people will have a problem voting gop in the senate despite trump. They still dont trust the dems and for good reason

Not sure what's going to happen, but Senators can sometimes ride the coattails of their party's nominee to victory.  I think demographic changes might be more significant in this election though.

Yeah, Trump might (hopefully) go away, but his pack of idiots will not. The sad and completely conceivable reality is that we could actually have a Republican candidate worse than Trump in four years. Pandora's Box has been cracked wide open.
