Eyewitnesses contradict DHS account regarding the shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.

The three men who were arrested during an immigration operation that resulted in the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo said a federal officer fired at them almost immediately after exiting his vehicle and that at no point did the driver veer in his direction.

The migrants are disputing key elements of the Department of Homeland Security’s account of what transpired during a chaotic traffic stop in a predominantly Mexican American neighborhood in Houston on Tuesday. They spoke from immigration detention with attorney Hugo Balderas-Ibarra, who shared their written and oral accounts with The Washington Post.

DHS released a statement hours after the deadly shooting saying that Salgado Araujo had rammed an Immigration and Customs Enforcement vehicle and "weaponized” his white work van "in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer.”

"That is a lie,” wrote Jose Trinidad Rojas, 51, in a handwritten statement. "It is impossible for them to say that they were going to get run over … there were no officers in front of or behind the vehicle. They were on the sides.”

Balderas-Ibarra spoke to Rojas, Daniel Tirado Pantoja, 43, and the shooting victim’s brother, Victor Salgado, 44, and said he heard the same story from each as he interviewed them separately. The men are not being housed together, the attorney said. All three are undocumented Mexican immigrants who are now facing removal proceedings.

"All of them reiterated that there were never any ICE agents in front of the van,” Balderas-Ibarra said. "They came in and started shooting from the sides.”

DHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the accounts of the migrants in the van at the time of the shooting.

How much you want to bet the body cameras were off?

What a bunch of BS.

Fsck ICE.

Wasn't even the target of the warrant they had. Someone is definitely going to get suspended with pay over this.

You'd think after Minn they'd have been told "hey don't stand in front of a vehicle, sign this memo so we know we briefed you on it". At this point, it's either wilful ignorance or worse. Granted, there will certainly be times where an office may through no fault of their own find themselves in front of a car like that, but it shouldn't be happening this often.

And nobody was wearing a body cam. When I was on years ago, the Commonwealth had laws on the books essentially preventing body cams. At the time, police could only record with a dash cam, audio around the vehicle, and the lights had to be on, and the camera system had to be approved by the State Police (so, you know, you could chose from any of a handful of super expensive systems that recorded straight to a slow play VHS). I had left right before they changed the laws allowing the body cams, but everyone I knew pretty much wanted them and were happy the laws were changed because then there's no mistake about what actually happened, and you wouldn't have to worry about getting dinged by a false complaint. Body cams were supposed to prevent any question as to the happenings of an incident, and they do.

At this point, the next admin needs to seriously contemplate consolidating federal LE, and turn ICE back into what it was in the INS days (a bunch of guys in khakis, polos, and windbreakers showing up).

They're not even using the "feared for his safety" line this time.

Yeah, if a pursuit is a threat to public safety, you terminate it and pick them up later. People can't run forever, and they can't outrun a radio.

The fact that there's no BWC is telling enough. IIRC didn't a federal judge order them to start wearing cams?

I thought so too. Clearly they think the don't have to answer to anyone though

Been pretty common under Trump. They only obey what they want to when it comes to court decisions.

A man driving to his job to support a family is a threat to public safety?

The usual suspects have been awful quiet lately. Did they finally get tired of doing backflips trying to justify all the fascism? Low stamina. Sad.

I haven't followed this latest round of sheet very closely. Do I understand correctly that in Maine ICE agents were looking for one specific guy and then shot and killed another guy as that other guy was driving away from them?

Pretty much, yes.
