Making a thread for this and not posting a link in the OP so it can still get edited with a real date later since the board is broken still lol

If they can remake this so soon (completely unnecessary), maybe they can remake the Star Wars content after Return of the Jedi and reset.

It was just a teaser but it looks good. Just weird to see the different actors after so many years with the old cast

I've heard Snape is being played by a black man, even though he's described constantly in the books as being extremely pale with string black greasy hair. The justification for this series was to follow the books more closely, but that doesn't seem to be the case. There are huge chunks of the books that were left out of the films, so Ill be interested to see if they put all of those parts into the series.

I don't believe the pale description is in the books

"sallow skinned"

In the Harry Potter books, Severus Snape is described as a thin, sallow-skinned man with greasy, shoulder-length black hair, cold black eyes, and a prominent hooked nose. He wears flowing black robes, often resembling an overgrown bat, and maintains a "sneering" or "twisted" facial expression. His appearance is sickly and intense.

Key Physical and Personal Characteristics:

  • Physical Appearance: Often described as pale, thin, and "scrawny". As a child, he was noted as round-shouldered and angular, with a twitchy, spider-like walk.

  • Hair and Eyes: Possesses long, oily, and lank black hair that frames his face. His eyes are dark, cold, and "sunken," often compared to tunnels.

  • Behavioral Traits: In the books, Snape is consistently portrayed as verbally aggressive, petty, vindictive, and intensely sarcastic. Despite this, he is also described as brave and brilliant.

  • Clothing: Usually described wearing long, black, flowing cloaks or robes.

  • "Bat" Description: The combination of his hair and robes frequently leads to comparisons of him looking like a "bat" or "overgrown bat".

A quick google search and black people can get sallow skin 🤷‍♂️

Looking at the actor and that description and thinking yeah he looks just like he’s described is more that a little bit of a stretch.

The whole point of the show was to be more true to the books than the movies. If they aren’t doing that, I’m not sure what the point of the show is.

You're making 1 character change a dealbreaker when it's possible there are a lot of things that are more accurate to the books than the movies. That's your prerogative but that's a bit much

I have no interest in Harry Potter or the lore, but the AI videos of Snape have been very funny watching.

The scoring rules ruin Quidditch. That's my hot take, I'll leave out the side door.

I've read some comments online from some fans and media blogs trying to promote it as a young generation of fans get to experience Harry Potter...as if they can't just watch the movies?

Whenever they race swap a character it's going to be questioned, whether it was just being "woke" to push diversity or why bother changing. There are times the race or even gender of a character don't matter as long as the actor portrays the character well (a good example is Jeffrey Wright in The Batman).

I think with Snape it's also because Alan Rickman gave such a great performance, he's very beloved by fans.

In addition, this is too soon after the movies came out. And they're going to wait between seasons, so it will end up like Stranger Things with the actors getting too old. And will fans care if they have to wait too long between seasons.

I didn't read the books, so I don't know how much was left out or not done well. I know some fans have shared things like how they portrayed Ron wasn't done well in the movies. Once it starts airing people will give reviews if it's good or not, we'll see. It seems unnecessary.

The thing is with HP, there are plenty of people of color as characters. However, even if they wanted to add more, there were better choices. Hagred for example could easily be a big burly black man. I also thought the actors would age waaaay too much if they are going to take long breaks. A lot was left out of the movies, so I thought there was an opportunity to do something cool with it, but I'm getting Kathleen Kennedy Star Wars vibes.

I wouldn't bat an eye at this except...HBO. Always give them the benefit of the doubt.

I've not read the books or seen anything more than maybe 1 hour of the films, but even I know the book fans are raising concern about Harry's Dad hanging Snape from a tree via his ankles and the connotations of translating that from the book to the screen. There are some other items of unintended consequences, but I'm not interested enough in Harry Potter to even work out what they were complaining about pointing out.

Point is, race and gender swapping characters should be avoided, but if you are going to do it, think about the downstream issues,.

I've had a similar experience with LOTR. No interest in it all; I know some people that are absolute nerds over it, but me? Nope.

TBF, HP was a kids book for me when it came out and I was more interested in Star Wars EU and other things. Someone in my family is an ultra nerd over it, so the family bank is doing well enough

He hung him by his ankles with magic. Not from a tree
