Eagles 5th round pick QB Cole Payton, North Dakota State

Featured Replies

This kid is a much better athlete than Nuss with far more mobility. His arm strength looks good enough although no rocket. The one thing that worries me is his release. He has sort of windup sidearm type of release. I can see a lot of blocked passes. If he turns into a capable #2 for a few years the pick is worth it rather than having to spend a lot on a veteran #2. I wouldn't expect much more than that.

But Dalton is the one they have the most $$$ committed to, isn't he? I know it isn't much so maybe Dalton would be tradable to a team that loses their starter early on?

Dalton is going to cost us $1.5M. His contract was restructured by Carolina for the trade.

Will one of the backups be ready in 2027 to take over for QB1 if Howie decides to trade Hurts?

That may be where we are headed in order to extend 3 or 4 defensive players.

It might also depend on how QB1 adapts to the new offense. I think he'd have to play pretty bad for Lurie to sour on him but I guess we'll see.

One of the post draft articles - I don't remember where I read it - said the Eagles would have to basically rebuild his throwing motion. That seems like it'd be tough this far into his football career but I guess Josh Allen kind of did that a few years ago.

He's a lot like Tim Tebow minus the college hype.

A Legend is born.

It's not much different than last season, is it? We draft a QB on day 3 and add competition so the best 3 make the team. You don't go into TC with only 3 QBs.

Yes, McKee could be dealt in a trade. So could Dalton for that matter. But for now, this gives us the 4 QBs we need in camp.

Yeah true, but if I remember rightly, McCord was going to make the roster, but McKee was hurt and the Eagles weren’t willing to go in to games with him as the two.

From what I’ve read, Payton is very much a developmental project. It’s highly unlikely that he will be able to beat out either of the Vets now. Equally the Eagles will be reluctant to just waste a fifth round pick.

The McKee speculation is therefore valid.

Would he last on the practice squad?

Most likely. If he makes it to our PS, another team would have to sign him to their active roster to poach him.
