Here's the math on 2 pt conversion try when down 14 or more: It's about a 50% league wide conversion rate, you need to score two TDs to get caught up so you have two opportunities to go for 2 and maintain the 50% conversion rate, thereby keeping the game tied. If you get it the first time, by the time you score the second TD, you'll be able to kick the PAT and you'll be up one.

Not sure it's the best decision but that's the analytic justification for going for it.
