January 11, 20214 yr Q: week 17 affect this? Lurie: nothing whatsoever. He heard Doug wanted to get Nate Sudfield some time. Heard Suds had a record for (something something missed it) vs Dallas one year. Was the backup to Foles in SB. I'm at practice a lot, Suds throws the best long ball on the roster. Plan was to get him more preseason before injury last year, plan was long-term backup. Offered him extension with millions. With no preseason this past year, no chance to see Suds. Jalen Hurts had an injury in the Dallas game, didn't want to hurt further. Had good intentions to get Suds in there.
January 11, 20214 yr Watching that press conference is like taking it up the arse with a kitchen knife.

(Boom!) Lurie: have you analyzed every pick and compared to every team? Is this short-term or long-term? You see other teams with good and bad personnel decisions. what about years they didn't have high picks from trading, what about guys you wanted but other teams picked. My job is to evaluate all this, can't speak about it publicly maybe someday write a book about it. Not satisfied even when winning, can always do better. Message to Jim Schwartz after SB: wow that wasn't a good defensive performance. Good against Falcons and Vikings but not Patriots. But we can’t get any better than Howie? 🙄

Oh great so Howie was really good at identifying the really good young players that went off the board before our pick. Well done Howie you knew the top guys just like every other freaking Tom Dick and Harry. Well done did you know that Chase Young was going to be a stud? And the Bosa brothers? I guess you knew that Ramsey was going to be a shutdown corner. Honestly this is such BS.

January 11, 20214 yr 2 minutes ago, jblah said: thats what i was thinking. basically we are going to suck the next couple of years. AND its not Howie's fault because we told him to draft for short term. So players like JJAW were drafted for instant impact rather than with the long term picture in mind?
January 11, 20214 yr Eskin Question: you said difference in vision between you and Doug, what specifically? And what about vision for hiring new coaches? Lurie: don't want to get into it, private. Saw this as a retooling of the team for mid-term/long-term decisions (not short-term). How would we best set up for success 2-3 years down the road. I'd rather not talk publicly about specific coaches but we saw things differently. It's more about where we are as a franchise heading into a retooling and a real transition period, trying to attract new OC and DC and other staff. You might not have success in that transition right away, so don't want to put Doug in that position.

Hurts had an injury and they still put him out there for 3 meaningless quarters? Then they should’ve played Sudfeld the entire game. Really frustrated with that Lurie press conference overall.
January 11, 20214 yr Ques: doesn't every team weight short vs long term and why was that gap not surmountable? Why can't you address both, find common ground there? Lurie: We changed our balance as a franchise from short, mid to long term. They used to be mid/long term and making unpopular decisions. Got into short-term to win SB and tried to retain the SB roster. Now getting back to mid/long term decisions. Look at final 4 teams the year they won the SB, all going through the same thing. Cited Atlanta. Teams tend to patch up post-SB and then unless you have an elite franchise QB (hmm) you have to retool. Giving up draft picks or drafting for position need are short-term.
January 11, 20214 yr Refreshing to hear him say that they sold the future for that chip. Howie would never say that publicly. the problem is that Howie flat out missed on more than a few picks that could make the future more immediate not 4-5 years from now
January 11, 20214 yr Thanks for everything Doug. No one can take our ring back and we will always be grateful to the man who delivered that to us against all odds.

January 11, 20214 yr Just now, DBW said: Refreshing to hear him say that they sold the future for that chip. Howie would never say that publicly. Howie has said that. Howie has said that every freaking year since the SB when it ended in somewhat disappointment. He talks every year about needing to get younger and not making decisions based on sentimentality. Then he drafts like a chump and has no choice.
January 11, 20214 yr Question: league trending offense and where this roster is, what are you looking for in next HC? And who will lead search. Lurie: I will lead the search, always do. Team will help: Howie, Don Smolenski, multiple people. Relationships with different people to get info on candidates. Characteristics: rather not specify, needs to be a leader of coaches and leader of players. We had a lot of that with Doug. Leadership is important. You can hire offensive coaches, or defensive coaches with good coaching on the offensive side. But you have to have an elite offense. But HC background doesn't matter.

Would've been nice if he said the GM, instead of Howie.
January 11, 20214 yr Question: Minority coach or coordinator? Lurie: top of my mind, need some of the best minority candidates in our search. I expect Duce Staley to be a candidate. Knows our values, great representative.
January 11, 20214 yr Most surprising thing Lurie said was he’s willing to hire a defensive minded coach as long as he has a top offense.
