Smart TVs, door locks, cloud based webcams - you no longer have control of your data and once it hits the Interwebz - who knows?

I'm an IT guy who specializes in network security. I disable this stuff on my phone, won't use voice activated anything. The idea of having an Amazon echo or Alexa disturbs me. I am picky about who I invite into my home.

The horror stories of people locked out of their houses because the software controlling their door locks is accidentally 'upgraded' to a menu kiosk are real. You lose all control with the cloud.

Beware.

@Toty Truth. Also cloud places give hackers one stop shopping to hack thousands in a single hack.

 

Example, if you use a VPN service - make sure it DOES NOT DO LOGGING - otherwise, the hacker just gets into their servers and picks up a log of ALL the customer's activity from one central place.

and i had planned to drop Directv in favor of a vpn to watch the Eagles this fall. Dammit, jim.

I agree people need to at least be aware of what they're getting into. Connected devices like Alexas are literally always listening - by design.

By nature, "the cloud" means that you are essentially using a hard drive that belongs to someone else in some other place.

Also, hackers are outpacing security right now by a mile.

Not saying everyone should move into log cabins, but sometimes less is more.

Hi, resident Apple homer soon. I prefer smart home devices with Homekit. Could just be marketing BS but I prefer their emphasis on safety though it restricts my selection of products. I do have a ring doorbell and camera/light over my garage. Before amazon bought ring it sounded like they were working toward it becoming homekit friendly.
