Listen, I watched Hurts a lot at Bama, and love the kid as a player and teammate, so my opposition is strictly based on the draft position.        Your scenario is flawed in that it defeats the purpose of building around a QB on his rookie deal.         

If Hurts was somehow still here as the backup 4-5 years from now and Wentz decided to hang them up, the Eagles are now forced to pay Hurts if he has shown he can play at a starting NFL level.         And at that point he will probably not have played enough to justify the type of contract it would take to keep him.

I believe this is the Eagles getting cute and being the smartest guys in the room once again.      They see what the Ravens are doing with Jackson and the Saints with Hill, and I think they intend on making Hurts a weapon in the offense, not just a clipboard carrier and running the occasional Wildcat.        Whether it works should basically be a determining factor in the future of Roseman and Pederson here, but for all we know Lurie was fully on board.

He's already started a controversy! Go look at some of the media stories. We just paid Wentz 100 million dollars!!!! You support that guy by drafting weapons for him. Not drafting a headache for him. Wentz throws one interception and the start Hurts crap will begin.

So Howie didn’t start it, the media did. The ravenous beat writers who have had NOTHING to write about now for months to justify their existence and pay...I’m shocked.  And they did get weapons for him. Sanders, JJaw, Goedert, Reagor, Hightower, Watkins, Goodwin and yes probably even Hurts to an extent. I’m not judging a 10 man draft and 12 UDFA period over 1 pick. And frankly like any draft we won’t know if it’s good or not for 2-3 years. But keep screaming at the sky, gonna do a lot of good.

I think the controversy will be a few years from now when we have to make a decision on Wentz. Does he get another 100 million dollar contract or do we trade him. I can't see Wentz making it through a second contract personally. Hell I hope he can make it through this one.

And if not... well i remember this sorry arse qb with googy long sleeves that netted us a 1st round pick via trade from a desperate team (and there’s no shortage of those every year)

It will really look stupid if Wentz can't stay upright but that's the risk that they took. They had already made a great investment to get Wentz in Philly. He's a great talent. Just the injuries are a problem and a big one at that. So feels like they are hedging their bet with a good prospect to develop while they are evaluating the next few seasons whether or not they can afford to make this potential mistake twice of locking in a big contract with Wentz.

It wouldn't be the first.

Another reason to hedge the bet and draft a QB.  Hurts contract will be 4 years/1.75 mil a season.

No you’re absolutely right. He did win us the division, well him and Miles. Guess I don’t see this as an F you by trying to be better prepared for if he goes down for a few weeks or a rest of the season scenario. The McCown’s and Flacco’s of the world aren’t the answer.

Yeah. I don't know why people think there are some sources out there saying Wentz will retire early. All I've seen is people using some logic in seeing what's happening around the league with guys getting injured a lot and retiring earlier. Like Luck for example.

Hopefully he leads the team to 10 more, but with his injury history they needed a back up plan.  This is the plan they chose.

It's only a controversy if you make it one. The front office was pretty clear saying that he's the franchise guy that they invested several picks and 100 million dollars in. Howie literally said it in a post draft interview.  Now Wentz has to play like he is worthy of those huge investments.

Guess we just see it differently. I view it as trying to be better prepared if the face of our franchise is hurt. You see it as Hurts has a remote chance of taking his job when both are healthy.

Did you not see the man get knocked out and forget what he had for dinner the prior 3 days during the playoffs? It's professional sports. You have to have a reliable back up in these days and times especially if you have an oft injured franchise QB that takes chances with his body.

Which could have been gotten in free agency. Leaving a pick available to take someone that actually has a good chance to start and contribute.

You don't get it. That's what got him the 1st 100 million. If he wants another 100 million he has to play the next four years like the beast that he could be without getting major injuries. If he doesn't, you have a young guy waiting in the wings to at the very least be a stop gap for the rebuild process.

Shouldnt that also have bought him the confidence of the team and assistance with as much help as possible? I mean say what you want about the Cowboys screwing around on Daks deal, look at the weapons Jerry gets him.
