Is Brady the reason for Belichick's success?

The Pats went 11-5 playing Matt Cassell as starter in '08, the idea it was all Brady is a nonsense. Having a great QB is part of the puzzle, but to keep turning the roster over and carrying on winning for 20 years?

By the logic of the Brady question, Bill Walsh had Joe Montana with Steve Young as back up throwing to Jerry Rice and could only win the big one 3 times, is he a horrible coach or are Montana and Young overrated? The answer is neither.

That was one year.  BB has coached for many many years, and but for a single season in Cleveland, has never coached a playoff team without Brady as the starter.  BB's genius was sticking with Brady over Bledsoe in 2001 where the common wisdom would have been to go back to the veteran starter after his injury healed.

Steve Young sucked wind before he was traded to the Niners, and while Montana was a HOF'er, we'll never know how good he would have been if a team like the Bears drafted him instead.

Bill Walsh revolutionized offense in the NFL, and his coaching tree has had unparalleled success.  Same cannot be said for Belichick.

Right now it certainly looks like all those championships were because Brady has an unbelievable drive to win and is a tremendous leader.  He stepped int the right situation with the Bucs and they made it happen.

This is still TBD, though.  How BB is viewed as a head coach very much depends on what he does in the next couple of years.  If he can turn Pats back into winners then he will be viewed as a good coach.  If the Pats just stumble into bad records then folks are gonna think that was all about Brady.

Not that I'm taking anything away from Brady but more credit should to go to Belichick.

It's not like the Pats were an offensive juggernaut during Brady's tenure there, overall they had much better defenses than offenses. The thing about Belichick's offenses were the players he put on the field, he knows what's hard to stop and leads to wins.

As for Brady in TB, once again, their defense had as much to do with that SB title as did Brady.

I disagree

The only time they were not in the top 10 in points during Brady's tenure was 2003.  They came in 12th.  11 times they were top 5 (and four more at 6 or 7). Because they were a top five scoring offense half the time under Brady, you could make an argument to classify them as a juggernaut.

As for yards they were top five 8 times and missed the top ten only 6 times.   While the yard rankings are a tad less than scoring, it's not surprising because they DID have a quality defense much of the time, so they likely had a shorter fields to work with and thus less yards to gain.

Offense Ranks:

Year Pts Yds
2019 7 15
2018 4 5
2017 2 1
2016 3 4
2015 3 6
