I thought Eagles would have 1-3 pick next year now I’m thinking # 1. There was more of a market this year. Last year Flacco had offseason next surgery and teams were scared off. I am just baffled by the negative response to giving Flacco $3.5 million. Did you see what Tyrod Taylor got? Trubisky, who wanted to play with the Bills, was the only better deal we saw in UFA. Would Flacco's deal have been $2 million in a perfect world? Sure. Is an extra $1.5 million in cap space worth convulsing about? Surely not. This contract is nowhere near egregious.

Didn’t they pay JP like six mil last year to do nothing? 😂 Didn't JP start out a $6 mil then got a raise to $8 mil when he 'moved' to LT? I don't care enough to look it up but yeah. Doesn't seem like JP got paid as well per play as DJax.

When Darnold played they were clearly the worst team in the league. In reality, this contract is extraordinarily team friendly. I assumed it would be much higher.

March 24, 20214 yr Honestly thought he would get more. Very team friendly. And should be a great person for Hurts to learn from.

I seem to recall he was kind of a dbag toward Jackson when they drafted him, pretty much taking the position that he was not interested in mentoring the new QB. But maybe that was only because he was a long time Raven and felt disrespected and would be willing to mentor a young QB now. But that still resonates with me.

I'd be surprised if he acted that way now. He has no leverage or standing anymore to do that. He's just lucky to still be on an NFL roster, plus he's a local guy, so he probably feels at home.

Flacco was the franchise for the Ravens, best QB in that franchises short history st the time and won a Super Bowl for them. From Flacco to Brady to Favre to Rodgers to Wentz, no vet QB is going to take kindly to a QB drafted early in the draft that might one day take their job. Flacco is now at the stage of his career of a journeyman veteran backup. He knows his career only continues in this league if she shows the value of being a helpful team player that can lend his expierence to a young starter in front of him.
March 24, 20214 yr This move makes as much sense as any of their others this off season. If you're building an offense around Hurts why bring in a spendy backup that has no mobility? Not to mention losing a comp pick because of it. Howie's gone completely off the rails.

Then there was the situation in Denver when he was asked if he was going to help to develop Drew Lock. He said, correctly, that he hoped Lock developed as a player but his (Flacco's) job was to learn the system and win games. That was twisted into "Flacco won't help Lock" and became a thing, when it wasn't really much of one. Here's the exact quote: "I got so many things to worry about," Flacco told reporters Monday, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "I'm trying to go out there and play good football. ... I'm not worried about developing guys or any of that. That is what it is. I hope he does develop. I don't look at that as my job. My job is to go win football games for this football team."
March 24, 20214 yr He's awful, hopefully we don't see him at all in any game during the regular season unless it is a blow out victory for the Eagles (which I highly doubt it happening next year).

Well this team is awful so who cares if the back up isn't that great? This fan base is absolutely obsessed with the freaking back up QB like in a really crazy kind of way.

At least Flacco had a career...

Granted, he was on the Jets last year but he looked like a guy who no longer belongs in the NFL. He should’ve retired. @T-1000 mentioned it already, but if you're looking at QBR from 2020, he would rank above Andy Dalton, right with Jarred Goff. Better than both Wentz and Hurts. Also, it's worth mentioning that he did this with a terrible Jets team and in a season where he wasn't fully healthy. I'm not saying I want the guy to be our long term answer at QB, but if we need a QB to start for 3-4 games he would not be such a terrible option. Plus, $3.5m is a decent price. If you're using Dalton as a comp, Dalton's getting paid $10m by the Bears.

This is from Jimmy Kempski’s article: There were certainly teams around the league that got better deals done with other backup quarterbacks. For example: The Bills signed 26-year old Mitchell Trubisky for $2.5 million. For a little extra money (but no incentives), Jacoby Brissett signed with the Dolphins for $5 million. A Flacco-equivalent player in Mike Glennon signed with the Giants for 1.35 million.
