I think the media is guilty of spreading BS, both sides. it's our job to shift through the crap and form our own opinions, not the government's. where are the big gun rights folks that scream and pound the desk anytime someone brings up new gun control laws ?

There's a difference between spin and lies made of whole cloth.  Pants on fire lies absolutely should be called out and labeled as such.  Even MB warriors like us who are interested in cross checking get fooled routinely.  Most people just get hooked, boated and filleted and never know it, sometimes with terrible consequences.

As for Trump, every single thing the press and the platforms do to him has been earned times a thousand.  The constant barrage of lies, hoax claims and bullying has put twitter into a corner where they know for a fact that their platform is becoming legally responsible for the damage.  They do this to protect themselves.

Let's see the actual final wording before we reach any conclusions.  This could be a really horrible thing or it may actually be a very good thing.  The devil will be in the details.

Will do, but I have every right to enter skeptical as F considering the hotheaded circumstances it was made under.

There are serious repercussions for what Trump is about to do (or try to do). Much bigger than just Twitter and Facebook. I hope people realize how much they f***Ed up electing this dope.

So we lose some inherent freedoms and become more like Russia every day? Small price to pay to own the libs!

We should absolutely wait to reserve judgement, I just have a real hard time seeing how this could be a good thing.  Both in itself and as a precedent for future actions.

Eh, a man-child puppet being controlled by some disgusting people....not sure how this is going to work out for the better.

wtf...

Agreed but get past that and see what is actually in there.

We've seen the value in limiting power in monopoly or near monopoly positions in the past.  This one shares some similar characteristics.

Some things happen by accident.

There is no way in hell this can be spun as a good thing. This is the government, and more specifically a man-baby President, trying to coerce a private enterprise because it hurt his feelings. This isn't happening because of some broader conversation about the roles and responsibilities of social media. This isn't a robust debate about a new public square vs. the rights of a private company. This is happening because Fat Donnie got his feelings hurt and now the wanna-be authoritarian is using the power of his office to punish a private company for daring to challenge him.

Anyone trying to act like there is anything here that isn't corrupt and ridiculous is deluding themselves. Even if you believe in greater regulation of social media, the ends do NOT justify the means. If you think this is OK, then you will be OK when President Biden does the same to reddit, foursquare and Fox News?

No. Hell no. HELL NO.

If you want to do this, do it the right way through Congress. Don't enable a wanna be authoritarian because you like the outcome. That's a hell of a precedent.

Yes and no.  That is what is said in the video.  The guy in the video saying politically, not physically, or as he says, not biblically.  So he wants the party to die out, not the people.

I buy that yes.  Do it thru Congress and not the EO.

So let the EO come out, strike it down in SCOTUS, and then push the policy thru Congress.  Yes.

Hopefully we can at least drop the charade now and all (and I mean everyone) admit to what he is, and what this is.

Sorry but the type of people that attend these things aren't really smart enough to grasp that. We all know they are trying to incite hate.

I'll remember this when President Biden breaks up Amazon by executive order.

I agree it’s a horrible choice of words and shouldn’t have said it.  If you watch the video, it’s quite clear what he’s saying, as he says it twice and explains it.  Doesn’t mean he should’ve said it the way he did.

Oh ok , we are just smudging the line this time to cross it later.

Right, this should not be by EO as Vikas points out.  Sloppy of me not to point that out.  I'm in large conf call and multi tasking.  Not an excuse but...

Eh, I don't care about the guy saying it. He's free to say what he wants. It's the POTUS posting it even though he has had the luxury of watching it and saying "yeah, poor choice of words". The real idiot is Trump (as usual).

true, and both sides have made up bold faced lies to push their agendas, there's really no debating that fact. sure most people have gotten sucked into a BS story at one time or another, but if a person gets caught rolling with a false news story, that's on them.

regardless of any of that, trump nor any other POTUS has the right to censor the media like this. especially considering how this sitting POTUS uses the very platform he's attacking to spread his own BS. it's 5th level hypocrisy.

Here it is: https://kateklonick.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/DRAFT-EO-Preventing-Online-Censorship.pdf

Guess what -- all it does is threaten the companies IF they dare to edit content. The rules had given them immunity, saying they aren't responsible for the content posted on their sites by users. Further, if they edit content because it violates the TOS or is obscene or wrong, they still aren't deemed a publisher and can't be sued. Fat Donnie is mad though, so now he wants the FCC to review the rules and say they CAN be found liable as a publisher if they edit content. Oh, and he also demands every federal agency review their ad spending on these platforms because they hurt his feelings.

Basically, the outcome of this would be -- none of these companies would police content at all and expose themselves to liability. Fake news would proliferate unchallenged. And...Russia wins.

Yeah, this seems like good policy.

Stop with the attempts at equivocation. This is a debacle in all ways -- both the means and the ends.
