Do I think he spends his nights in his basement pining on how to kill Democrats? No. But I do believe he meant what he said in the literal context in which he gave it, without his clarification. I believe most MAGA feel the country would be better off with people like me dead. That's not some foreign idea... just listen to them talk every day.

That being said, there's clearly a wide gulf between feeling that way and being willing to actually make that reality happen. No, he wasn't calling for the death of Democrats. He was simply musing on the idea of a country without Democrats in the cruel way we've seen Trump Republicans respond to. And that's bad enough.

I remember listening to right wing talk radio when Obama won in 2008. The talk was much the same.

You, and others making this claim, fundamentally misunderstand a monopoly vs. simply being successful.

Standard oil was a monopoly because they controlled the entire supply of refined oil products. The Bell system was a monopoly because they controlled the access to the home through phone lines. Cable companies were monopolies for the same reason and were forced to allow competitors to use their infrastructure.

Facebook, Twitter, etc. aren't monopolies because nothing they do prevents competition. Hell, starting an internet site/company is remarkably easy. You could start a social media platform tomorrow with little effort. Just being large and popular does NOT make you a monopoly.

I fully understand what a monopoly is and isn't which is why I said that today's FB/Twitter wouldn't meet the criteria.  That doesn't mean the conditions can't become such that put someone in the same type of spot as Standard Oil once had with regard to one to many communication at some point in the future.

When I commuted I listened to AM politics for hours during the day. I respect conservative principles and agree with them on some occasions. I even voted against the prop to introduce a state income tax here in Texas. And I like having contesting points of view in general. It makes for better policy.

But man alive these people who call in... there is real, deep seeded hatred in their bones for Democrats. They hate me more than they like Trump, which is a strange thing to say because they love them some Trump.

The two are intertwined. The more liberals hate Trump, the more they love him. There was a really good piece on Politico someone posted about a year in to Trump's presidency. I had never understood the appeal of Trump to republicans. He's obviously a moron, and hasn't accomplished much of anything. The reporter went to a small western PA town and asked a bunch of Trump supporters things like...

Do you think Trump will bring jobs back? No.

Do you think he will really build a wall and get Mexico to pay for it? No.

Do you think he will replace Obamacare with something better and less expensive? No.

Will you vote for him again? Absolutely

Why? Because he sticks it to the people I don't like. He puts those (n-word) kneeling football players in their place.

It's a cultural war. Its not about politics or policies. Now not spreading a disease (of all things) has become part of that cultural war as well. We would probably be better off as separate countries.

This.  We'd be VASTLY better off.  The only argument otherwise is that the two sides moderate each other, but the downsides outweigh the benefits and if one side hates the other so much that hatred of the other side is the sole quality they look for in a President, then there's really no point in holding it together out of a sense of tradition.  We're a big country and it was always unlikely that we'd last like this for too long, no sense in lying to ourselves.  Break it in half.  Split right down the middle.  I'd support any candidate (R or D) that proposed it.

Better off giving Trumpbots the confederate states. Then they can make him king for life and then it can pass down to Ivanka when the big macs finally get him

I'm not convinced Trumpbots, if given everything they ask for, would be happy. Angry people need to be angry at something. They'd inevitably turn on themselves in their search for a cause.

What they want, more than anything else, is to own the libs. That's it. So splitting the country would be a debacle, because who would they own?

Also, it would be an economic catastrophe as most of the wealthy areas go to Blue America, but we don't need to dive into that.

I kind of want to dive into that though.  I think you'd have to propose an even split.  Unless we're talking bloody revolution where the actual confederate states try and secede again.  But if it were a Czechoslovakian-style amicable split, it would almost have to be proposed as a divide right through the center of the country.  In that case, you'd have the United States and the Pacific States, and just naturally let the majority of liberal America migrate to the Pacific states.  So, initially, you wouldn't necessarily have a dirt poor eastern country, but in time, it would probably move in that direction.

Trump is an idiot and his executive order will be meaningless but I do not like the idea of twitter deciding to fact check tweets.

So New York City goes to Red America? Yeah...that won't work. You'd have to basically re-create NYC somewhere in the west where people want to live. And in that disruption, we lose the advantage of having the financial capital of the world in the US, which would be a debacle.

And then there's the forced migration of people. I'm Indian. We did this in 1947. It didn't go so well...I lost relatives.

Yeah, there's a lot of issues with it.  I'm not saying there aren't.  Though I don't necessarily think you'd need to force any migration.  It would happen naturally.  Probably the best method would actually be splitting the country up into 4 separate countries.  The Northeast + a few Candanian-bordering north central states, the former Confederacy + some midwestern states, The Pacific and Mountain States and then just let Texas go back to being their own country.

We topped 100,000 deaths and Trump is worried about Twitter calling out false statements he makes and mail-in ballots. I'm disabled and can't drive. The mail-in ballot is the only way I can vote.

I still don't understand why Republicans haven't started an alternative to Twitter that only caters to right-wing snowflakes.  That's who Trump's trying to reach anyway.  All he would have to do is gravitate to that new platform and they'd immediately have millions of customers.  Then he could lie and defame anyone he wants with no repercussions.

They did.

Trump should sign up. That's really all it would take to make one of them relevant.  They'd gain millions of losers, I mean users, overnight.  Would Trump reach as many people?  Definitely not, but he'd be able to spout as many lies as he wants and still speak to basically everyone that takes him seriously.

In a statement, Democratic FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel echoed the First Amendment concerns.
"An Executive Order that would turn the Federal Communications Commission into the President's speech police is not the answer," she said Thursday. "It's time for those in Washington to speak up for the First Amendment. History won't be kind to silence."

That would be terrible for Biden. Luckily, trump either doesn’t realize it or doesn’t accept it.

Yesterday: we need to regulate and control social media because it's so unfair.

Today: retweet "the only good democrat is a dead democrat"

Tomorrow:  profit?

Sorry I helped contribute to the death of your loved ones by being an incompetent leader?

Lol I was wondering where the social media discussion was happening. Guess I shouldn't be surprised it was in this Trump thread rather than the other

I couldn't disagree more. These are PRIVATE companies. They can block and censor comments as they choose. Don't like it? Don't use Twitter

There is no right to free speech on a communications platform provided by a private enterprise.

Agreed. There are other options. Maybe not as global but oh well. Every year it seems there's a new social media platform. Some get big and some don't. Personally I'd prefer if he stayed off social media. The idea was nice having a president conversing with us but not like this.

Apparently tiktok is the new thing
