McConnell and McCarthy looked at polling numbers and decided to cave apparently

Quote
While Trump continued to insist the election was stolen, the authors reveal that behind the scenes, many top Republicans, including members of his own Cabinet, tried to reason with him to concede. For example, on November 23 then-Attorney General William Barr bluntly told Trump there was no widespread fraud. "The problem is this stuff about the voting machines is just BS," Barr said, according to the book.
Woodward and Costa also write that Barr called Trump's legal team "a bunch of clowns."
Other Republicans went along with Trump's fantasies about the election, at least for a while. Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, who still wanted Trump's help in the runoff elections for the two US Senate seats from Georgia, explained to Barr, "I have to be gentle," according to the book.

But after the Electoral College affirmed that Biden won the White House in December, McConnell delivered a floor speech recognizing Biden as President-elect. Trump called McConnell immediately afterward and "spewed expletives," according to the book.
"And this is the thanks I got?" Trump asked. "You never really got me. You don't understand me."
McConnell ended the call, according to the authors, by telling Trump, "You lost the election. The Electoral College has spoken."
Briefly in the aftermath of the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, some top Republicans acknowledged Trump's complicity in the assault. Both McConnell and GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy denounced Trump from the floors of the Senate and the House.
The book details a private call McCarthy had with Trump the night before Biden's inauguration. According to Woodward and Costa, McCarthy told Trump, "I don't know what's happened to you in the last two months. ... You're not the same as you were for the last four years."
McCarthy then repeatedly pleaded with Trump to call Biden.
"You've done good things and you want that to be your legacy. Call Joe Biden," McCarthy said, according to the authors.
"Do it for me," the GOP leader continued. "You've got to call him. Call Joe Biden."
Former President Donald Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy met in February at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

Trump refused McCarthy's request and never called Biden.
Nine days later, McCarthy traveled to Mar-a-Lago to try to get back into Trump's good graces. While Trump publicly released a picture smiling shoulder to shoulder with McCarthy, privately he was attacking McCarthy behind his back, according to Woodward and Costa.
"This guy called me every single day, pretended to be my best friend, and then, he Fed me. He's not a good guy," Trump told friends at a February dinner, making clear he was still angry with McCarthy. "Kevin came down to kiss my ass and wants my help to win the House back."
Even after January 6, senior Republicans continued to debate how to take advantage of Trump's popularity with the Republican base. Woodward and Costa write that McConnell saw Trump as a fading brand, describing him with a horse-racing analogy as a retired "OTTB," or off-the-track thoroughbred.
"Sucking up to Donald Trump is not a strategy that works," McConnell said, according to "Peril.

Even Graham...

Quote
"We can't do it without you, Mr. President," Graham told Trump after a round of golf in May, according to the authors. "You have to help us. But you're going to have to focus on the future, not the past, to maximize our chance at success."
Then Graham gave Trump a dose of tough love in a phone call, telling Trump, "You Fed your presidency up," according to the book. Trump abruptly hung up.

The old guard should have split off at that point.  It would have helped hasten the total destruction of the lunatics and the cult in charge now and left a piece at least marginally in tact from which to restart.

I was hoping it was only  a third of Republicans, but the number of fruitbats seems closer to half.

I think they’ll be a lot of infiltrators by his definition.

I’m not sure there’s a single Biden supporter who is concerned enough about the January 6th defendants to attend a protest.

I’m sure there will be plenty of anti-Trump protesters too.  I’m expecting nothing less than mayhem.

It’s a great opportunity for people to get incarcerated and also for a lot of unvaccinated people to give each other Covid. Other than that it’s a great idea.

Just think of all the crazy vehicles you see covered with Biden flags, the Biden hats, the t-shirts - how can you possibly hope that the masses of Biden worshiping cultists won't crash the party with all their FBI (Antifa) pals?

Gen. Mark Milley was disgusted and said he was "Fing done with this crap" after then-President Donald Trump used him and other senior officials to stage a controversial photo op at a church in Washington, DC, amid last summer's George Floyd protests, a new book says.

Milley, then-Defense Secretary Mark Esper, then-Attorney General William Barr, and several others were summoned to the White House on June 1, 2020 and told to "line up" shortly after Trump gave a Rose Garden speech threatening to deploy US troops to quell antiracism protests across the country.

Reporters and photographers swarmed the group, led by Trump, as it trooped across Lafayette Square while police cleared the park by using tear gas and pepper balls on peaceful protesters. Trump was later photographed holding up a bible outside St. John's Episcopal Church.

When Esper realized he was participating in the photo op, he suddenly felt "sick," according to "Peril" by The Washington Post's Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, an early copy of which was obtained by Insider.

While they were walking to the church, Esper turned to Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and was quoted as saying, "We've been duped. We're being used."

Milley is said to have agreed and turned to his chief of staff and said, "This is Fed up and this is a political event and I'm out of here," according to the book. "We're getting the F out of here. I'm Fing done with this crap."

The next day, he sent a memo to the joint chiefs of staff and senior Pentagon officials reminding them of their duty to the country and the Constitution.

"Please remind all of our troops and leaders that we will uphold the values of our nation, and operate consistent with national laws and our own high standards of conduct at all times," he said in the memo, a copy of which was published in "Peril." Milley also included a handwritten note at the end, saying, "We all committed our lives to the idea that is America — we will stay true to that oath and the American people."

Milley was so plagued by the photo op that he considered resigning, Woodward and Costa reported. The general is said to have asked former Secretary of State Colin Powell — who also previously served as joint chiefs chairman — if he should resign.

"F no!" Powell responded, according to the book. "I told you never to take the job. You never should have taken the job. Trump's a Fing maniac."

Eric Trump mocked for complaining his family are getting subpoena after subpoena

"The problem with the Democrats is they dig so deep that they always find themselves,” Mr Trump said. "And the reason I’m frustrated about this is every single day since my father ran for president, my father and our entire family and our company has been under investigation. Every single day, Maria, we get subpoena after subpoena after subpoena.”
