He can't compete with Trump when it comes to rhetoric and rallying the vocal nutjobs. Now neither could Biden but he didn't have to, all he had to do was win the moderates. Desantis has to thread the needle when it comes to appealing to the moderates who are "meh" on Biden, while still managing to appeal to enough of the rabid MAGA wing to not only beat out Trump in the primary, but survive the inevitable hissy fit Trump throws afterwards. Not the easiest feat.
