But what if he *officially* took 10 million from Egypt in 2016?

It's not official to accept a 10 million dollar campaign contribution from Egypt. Foreign contributions are illegal for a reason. His reason here was the money in exchange for releasing military supplies and changing our policy towards Egypt in return. Sisi was his favorite dictator who came to power in a coup and killed his political rivals.

I think that is something his lawyers will have to argue. How he was immune doing official POTUS business, when he wasn't even elected POTUS yet.

First, who is that Trumpy-looking imposter in the middle of the picture?

Influencer gives Trump a Tesla, a Rolex … and a campaign finance violation?

Video game streamer Adin Ross’s gifts worth tens of thousands may fall foul of fundraising law

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/aug/06/trump-adin-ross-tesla-rolex

Quote

After Donald Trump sat down for an interview with a social media influencer whose past guests have included an accused rapist and an avowed white supremacist, the host gave the former president a Tesla Cybertruck as well as a Rolex watch in what could amount to a campaign finance violation.

Trump’s campaign has since said that it will seek guidance from the Federal Election Commission on how to handle the gifts. The internet celebrity who hosted Trump, Adin Ross, has not publicly commented on the gifts in relation to campaign finance laws, which limit individuals’ contributions to political candidates they support to $3,300 – far below the value of the truck and watch.

Ross, a 23-year-old professional video game streamer, has risen to fame by hosting interviews of guests such as Andrew Tate – who is facing rape and human trafficking charges in Romania – and the white supremacist provocateur Nick Fuentes.

This poor old guy is too tired to campaign.

How about Vance for president, and his running mate could be Kanye? Or Charlie Kirk? Or maybe Alex Jones?

JD VANCE and Trump Jr?

I highly suspect he's in his bunker looking to recalibrate.  It was right about this point in the '16 campaign when he chucked the moderates like Christie and doubled down MAGA with the likes of Bannon, Stone and Conway's alt facts. Everybody made fun of it but that's what won him the race. No doubt Trump will shuffle the deck and come up with some headlines (bye bye Vance?)

Is that what won him the race? Or Hillary's unpopularity? Perhaps with moderates he would have won with a wider margin, and also set MAGA up in such a way where 2016 wasn't their only electoral success.

Mid august Trump was losing.  He was trying to veer from the primaries and come off as more moderate.  He made those switches, found his voice as full throated MAGA and won. Say what you want about Hillary, she had quite the machine at her disposal and Democrats didn't exactly hate her.  Trump did several things in that campaign that earned him the upset.

He won the race, so hey, I can't take that away from your point. But I don't believe that full-throated MAGA was ever a fully, coast-to-coast popular thing. Examples: MAGA 2018, 2020, and 2022, and even 2016's pretty thin victory.

But you have a point. He committed to the message rather than tiptoeing around it like republicans of yore. Possibly activated enough of his base to push him over the finish line. Although, as we've seen, he can't quite expand beyond the base.

No doubt about it, Trump is a major drag on GOP midterms.  When the party is all about him and he's not on directly on the ballot, they get whooped.  But in both of his POTUS races I'd say trump has overperformed by quite a margin. Say what you want about Hillary, she got a shite ton of votes.  And in 2020 Trump overperformed again.  During the pandemic and his scatterbrain handling of it and the riots Trump was set up for a complete and total drubbing. Instead he defended his COVID record and shout down Biden to a race that he lost handily but by a respectable enough margin for him to pull his steal BS.

When Trump is fighting for Trump, you underestimate at your own peril and he ain't slain til the fat lady sings (and the courts decide 100 verdicts).

Anybody else would get 2-4 years in prison because of bad behavior and lack of remorse.  I seriously doubt he's shown contrition to the court or in his post-conviction hearing.

Trump will likely get sentenced to 2 years probation with no jail time, unfortunately.  He should have to do at least 6 months of house arrest, but I doubt he'll even get that.

It was a combination of what you describe - Trump embracing full on MAGA -- and Hillary simultaneously being both an awful and overconfident candidate. You can't ignore Hillary's massive error in ignoring Wisconsin and Michigan because she thought she was going to win Arizona. Add in the reopening of the email case, and it was a wild confluence of events that elected Trump -- MAGA backlash against a black President, an awful Democratic candidate that acted as if she was owed the Presidency, and an October surprise.

Trump crypto is going swimmingly.
