People wanted an experiment in 2016. It is clear that the experiment is over. Find out in five months. Just like the last election.

July 6, 20205 yr There is a quite active debate now within my high school about our team name which is "Indians". Most of this is played out on FB. I'm being very cautious there but of course there are ridiculous posts from the sides (both). This isn't a new topic. It has been around for almost 10 years. One interesting tidbit in this particular situation is that there was a communication between the school and the descendants of the local tribe a few years ago and a bit of a compromise was reached. That has been conveniently forgotten of course. So the louder types pushing for the change have succeeded in taking away the tribe's voice. Too Fing funny. Note: The compromise was no use of caricatures, no physical mascot, no use of emblems with headdress/tomahawk, no war chants, feather in the logo is ok, name of "Indians" is also ok. This has been executed as I understand it. An open board meeting is coming up with this being the main point on the agenda. There was one like it a few years ago which was pretty stormy but this one is going to be a full on sheet show. My bet is the name will change now. I'm ok with that though I'd prefer a solution with the national group from the tribe if there is one out there. If not then so be it. I'd rather it not be up to a handful of student activists none of whom are of Indian descent (far as I've been told).

You guys aren't seeing reality if you think it is the same situation. It is FAR FAR from the situation in 2016.

Liberals are coming for...i dunno...some cultural stuff Trump never gave a crap about. Brown people are invading. And coronavirus doesn't exist. So, uhh, vote for Trump — because whatever he complained about four years ago, he still hasn't solved.

Of all the things going on in the world, sports team names is like #4,000 on the list. And I'm not Native, so maybe I should just STFU, but I could see a team being called the "Aztecs" or the Cherokee, the Crow, etc...because it's just kind of a callback to the people who originally inhabited that land. But "Indians" just feels like a celebration of calling people the wrong name because you thought you landed on an entirely different continent . I'm not clutching pearls, as I just don't have the energy for this...so take it as more of a funny observation than a political stance.

Well it is driven by the actual students at the school none of whom are Indian. I'm fine with changing the name. What I'm not ok with is the students thinking the only voice that matters is their voice. The actual Indians are the obvious voice plus everyone else like the future students, alumni, and community. We aren't doing the students any favor by simply bowing down to their demands even if they are legit. There should be a proper process with actual discussion, real critical analysis, etc. It is the smug "we know better so shut up boomer (and all other generations not currently in high school)" that isn't helping anyone.

Turns out they have just voted to change the school's name starting in the new school year. A July board meeting is setup to discuss the matter.

There are others to think about like the kids on the way, community, administration/teachers, alumni etc. It isn't like the current crop of kids can just change the name willy nilly whenever they want to.
