South Dakota approves Medicaid expansion over GOP resistance

South Dakota voters on Tuesday approved the expansion of Medicaid health insurance to tens of thousands of low-income residents through a constitutional amendment.

The majority vote to support Constitutional Amendment D removes South Dakota from a list of 12 states that have not expanded eligibility for the government health insurance program to people earning up to 138% of the federal poverty level — currently about $18,800 for an individual or $38,300 for a family of four.

The Republican-controlled Legislature had declined to expand Medicaid eligibility under the 2010 federal Affordable Care Act, and Gov. Kristi Noem has opposed the idea. But proponents for expansion have found success through ballot measures across GOP-dominated states, and a wide coalition of health care groups and organizations backed a well-funded ballot campaign this year in South Dakota.

"We’re a farm community, and people just can’t afford insurance so they need some more help,” said Bob Pederson, a Sioux Falls retiree who voted to expand eligibility Tuesday.

Dave Melemseter, also voting in Sioux Falls, said he backed expansion even though he worried it would weigh heavily on the state budget. Melemseter — who like Pederson said he usually votes Republican — said it was important for people to have coverage.

"I think it will pass and I think six years down the road, we’re going to be stuck with a really big bill,” he said.

Once a proposition that was anathema to conservatives, its passage would be a sign of growing acceptance even in a deeply red state.

Health issues notwithstanding, Fetterman was an absolutely an EXCELLENT candidate. He won in no small part due to making inroads in rural and blue-collar areas. He did an excellent job of cobbling together various liberal policies and communicating them in ways that were authentic and effectively insulated him from being associated with extremism. Fetterman is the kind of candidates Dems should model themselves after to recapture white, non college-educated votes in purple states. Saying he was a "bad candidate" is a delusional case of sour grapes.

But they still voted for Noem, even though she opposed the legislation :roll::roll::roll::roll:

Elections are fun! :pizza:

The mid terms are just proof of how gullibly stupid the general public can be. 78% of people think the country is heading in the wrong direction, yet- so many voted to stay going in that direction....  you cannot make this up. Like hey- sure you are doing a horrible job, but, we will give you another shot, we dont mind the highest inflation in 40 years, we dont mind the escalating crime, the border crises, we dont mind draconian mandates...  "RULE ME MORE DADDY"

LOL...

not much to tell. I mean- when the left controls the narratives through MSM, Big Tech, school and universities????  I'ts a wonder the conservatives get any votes at all.

The fact that the Repubs win the House and still possibly the senate, is quite possibly the best thing to happen for all of us.   A divided government keeps things centered.

If you ever hear of Truth Social that a good place to get RREAL free speech. With the left control everything else, I not even sure Im comfortable speaking my mind anywher without getting cancel or arrested. It sad what happen to this country

seeing so many so-called alphas lick the boots of such a weak, soft, pathetic loser is both comedic gold and a horrific display of their stupidity.

C'mon man...take a step back from your side of the partisan aisle. It is perfectly ok to say Fetterman is a bad candidate. He just so happened to be less bad than Oz, which led to a win. By the way, before anyone says anything I don't think Herschel Walker is fit to be a Senator either. Every election cycle I'm constantly befuddled as to how many candidates from both parties...absolutely suck.

That's... Not what Mike said. He didn't say "man how could the state have voted for a guy with those policies".

He said that Fetterman was a vegetable and then claimed the esteemed and brain-damaged serial abuser and vacant father down in Georgia was superior intellectually. Which is laughable given that Fetterman has a master's degree from Harvard.

So no, mike didn't say Fetterman was a "bad candidate". He said he was a vegetable who "couldn't even take care of himself." Which he clearly is not given his victory speech.

No need to get indignant about correcting mike's errors. You'd never have time for anything else if you took on that responsibility.

@Ipigglesno doubt you voted for oz over mccormick in the primary.

If McCormick got the nod over Oz in the primaries and everything else played out as it did in the lead up, is Fetterman still the winner?

I know the answer, and it should pain every single Republican.
