At just about the half way point into the season, thought I'd create a thread to track the 1st rd picks we are projected to receive in the 2022 NFL draft.  I will update the first post weekly (or if any other moves are made that impact draft position such as trades, etc.).

Nov 2, 2021

3 – from Miami

8 – our own

9 – *from Indianapolis (should Wentz continue to meet the >75% total snap criterion, or >70% and the Colts make the playoffs – thus far we are on target to take receipt of this pick)

Howie gonna trade down and acquire more 1st round picks for the 2023 draft.

I‘d like to do that to some degree.

I suppose you think it‘s a bad idea, but I think it most likely is the smart thing to do.

My Doomsday-scenario is packaging all those picks for Watson.

This is actually what I’d like to see happen. We could hedge this and have multiple first round picks forever. Abuse the fact that future picks are valued lower

The best part of this season is imagining who we'll take in the first round next year with all of our picks.

The second-best part of the season is imagining Howie won't be making those picks.

That second part definitely takes some of the shine off of the first part.

Actually this is what I want him to do. I actually brought this idea up a few weeks ago. Basically trading down for 2023 firstb but still getting a first like they did with Miami. 7 first round picks in 2 seasons is intriguing. On top of that they would have more than enough capital to either move up and get QB in the 23 draft or even trade for a guy if they wanted to.

However it shakes out, the Eagles are going to have 4 picks in the first 2 rounds of the 2022 Draft. I think they can do a little of both: Take some players, and trade down to stockpile picks later. But there aren't any projected superstars in this year's draft. Only the Texans, maybe the Lions, are looking at QB early. I doubt the Jets, Jags, or Giants take another QB... So it might be best to hold the early picks and take best players on the board.

Are 3 first rounders too expensive? What does that do to the salary cap?

It's better than 3 expensive veterans. They will have enough space.

Howie's going to give all three to whoevers holds #1 and then draft the most overrated QB in next years draft.

I thought that was Willis but I saw someone in I want the Eagles to get say Matt Corral reminded them of Joe Montana. so now it's a wash.

Anything over a sixth for Watson is too much.

If they aren’t drafting a QB this year, think that’s smart.

I’d keep the Dolphins (expect it will be our highest) then trade either ours or Colts pick for a first next year plus a late first/second this year depending on where it lands. We can still get a quality player there and gives us ammo to get a QB in 2023 if needed

At least Howie has positioned himself to have options. Can’t complain about that.

Howie will trade these to move back and then bunch a few more together to move back up and take a developmental safety coming off an injury who would have been a first rounder.

Sounds about right.

Listed below are ALL Eagles draft picks in the top 20 picks of the first round since 2008, when Howie Roseman was promoted to VP of player personnel:

  1. 2009 pick 19:  Jeremy Maclin
  2. 2010 pick 13:  Brandon Graham
  3. 2012 pick 12:  Fletcher Cox
  4. 2013 pick 4:  Lane Johnson
  5. 2015 pick 20:  Nelson Agholor
  6. 2016 pick 2:  Carson Wentz
  7. 2017 pick 14:  Derek Barnett
  8. 2021 pick 10:  DeVonta Smith

I realize it's de rigueur to whine about Roseman's draft acumen, but I am not seeing a lot of failure here with high 1st round picks.

The problem has been with late 1st round picks (picks 21 and later):

  1. 2011 pick 23:  Danny Watkins
  2. 2016 pick 26:  Marcus Smith
  3. 2019 pick 22:  Andre Dillard
  4. 2020 pick 21:  Jalen Raegor

The first two are awful busts and the last two are leaning that way (though they still have at least some chance to be productive players).  Regardless, it is certainly more difficult to hit on late 1st round picks than early/mid 1st round picks, and perhaps Roseman has been guilty of trying to play a bit of hero ball with late 1st rounders.

Bottom line:  If the Eagles do end up with three high 1st round draft picks, I will remain optimistic that they will add some high-quality roster-changing talent.

I would trade at least one of the 3. Not sure which one, or for what, but that will be determined at a later time.

I don't want a 1st rounder spent on a QB though. As of now, no college ones are that good, IMO. If Hurts proves he can play, then the QB room is set with him and The Stache as #1 & #2.

The first part wouldn‘t exist without him though. Both additional firsts took a GM like Roseman. The typical GM would sit there with a CB instead of Smith and an extra third for Wentz.

And people would be fine with that!!

Hey!  How dare you defend Howie around here!  Seriously, he has done some good things when wheeling and dealing … it is mainly his talent evaluation skills (or lack thereof) that leads to the disdain for him.

If we can somehow manage those 3 I'd be insanely happy. All I know is that we need a heavy defensive draft.

I think Thibodeaux unfortunately isn't realistic if we don't have #1.  But if we could do Hamilton, Stingley/Booth/Elam and Hutchinson that's a huge win.  I understand Hamilton isn't realistic either due to position, but I think he's a generational talent at the S spot.

I have very little to no faith in our current DC anyway. So probably wouldn't matter anyway.

I agree about Thibodaux. He might be out of reach. Hopefully the season plays out our way with Mia. Not holding my breath though.
