I believe the filibuster is overused. I don’t know if it must go away completely, but its use should be limited.

Gotta hate checks and balances. Seems like the government worked just fine.

I'll tell you when government was broken - when Bill Clinton was president.  Yet somehow, the parties, despite a high level of animosity, managed to work together and get a lot done.

What legislation do you think needs to be passed via a bi-partisan effort but isn't?

@mikemack8 get in here and get"em!

The only throttle control in congress is the filibuster. Eliminate that and you wind up with laws passed and then laws cancelled.

There's more than enough time wasted in congress.

Voting rights ought to be bipartisan.
And infrastructure.  Luckily it passed, just barely.

"Voting rights” 🙄

The U.S. already has "voting rights" embedded in the Constitution.  We don't have Jim Crow laws, and if they were enacted, they'd be stricken down quickly in federal court.  Anybody who wants to vote and who is eligible can vote.  There is no right to vote before election day.  There is no right to vote without presenting identification to show who you are.

Have you examined the infrastructure bill?  I agree that infrastructure should merit a bi-partisan effort.  A bill masquerading as one for infrastructure but in fact one laden with pork does not require a bi-partisan effort.

I’d prefer that we leave it as it is but, in the spirit of compromise, I’ve come up with a proposal.  Want to hear it?  Here it go.  The filibuster can only be used when one party controls all 3 branches. Otherwise, there will already have to be some negotiating, some working together with each other, to get the bill through reconciliation and signed.

This kill the filibuster for "voting rights" legislation is a blatant power grab attempt by the Democrats and they damn well know it.

Yes, and now I’m in full support of Republicans doing it when they take power.

But, we all know the GOP doesn’t have that kind of killer instinct unfortunately.

Drop cloture to 55 and return the filibuster to its speaking origins. It was never meant to just be a straight block of legislation, it was for windbag politicians to make a statement on legislation that was inevitable. When it became a procedural motion or whatever it is it began to be abused.

It seems I must elaborate... By voting rights, there shouldn't be a unnecessary series of obstacles to navigate to cast a vote. Voters should decide elections, not some politicians in closed-door meetings. When state legislatures threaten to take control of elections and decide outcomes by themselves because they are not happy with the electorate's choices; those shenanigans must be abolished. I also think we need a nonpartisan commission to draw Congressional districts.

And cry all you want about the infrastructure bill. It's the best we got that's been passed in 20+ years. It passed 69-30 in the Senate (with 19 Republican votes), until the House GOP decided "no" because they couldn't bear to give Biden any sense of a win, after Trump failed over 4 years. If you actually loved America, I believe you'd want to invest in it.  :usa:

Keep the damn filibuster in place while we have an incompetent rabid left wing mob at the helm of both branches of Congress and the White House.  These are dangerous people that need to be held in check.  Hopefully, the events of today are the beginning of the tide turning back to sanity - and no I don't mean Trump - I mean a retreat from the insane woke, leftist ideology and left wing blatant attempts to grab power.

There aren't.  And there already are protections in place.  That's what federal courts are for.

As for the bill, have you seen the inflation figures for December?  This is the biggest danger to our economy and can ruin a lot of lives.  It's a much bigger danger to our nation right now that dilapidated infrastructure.  We're not in a position to keep throwing money around right now - especially money that we don't have and is being printed.

I’m happy to turn a blind eye to what goes on at the polls if you’ll kindly leave me alone with 4473’s, $200 tax stamps and other silly ATF nonsense.

So which way are you going to vote? You have exactly two options.

Absolutely.  I suspect he is torn and I understand why as I am also not happy with only having these two choices given where we are today.  This situation is a symptom of how unhealthy the US democracy is right now.  This is like a train wreck in slow motion and we've all been watching it ramp up over the last 10+ years.

btw - Your vote isn't on the option that you actually support.

I know - it was an accident and I couldn't fix it after the fact.  Life is filled with disappointments

I refuse to participate in your closed, 2 party system.

I am writing in "reform the filibuster."

I thought about adding a 3rd option which would have been preferable for me as well but I decided to force the issue here.  Naturally you need not participate.

Infrastructure is not tied to inflation. Also this isn't some short-term shot in the arm to the economy. It is a long-term investment. It will lead directly to jobs, working on roads and bridges, etc. Those improvements will lead to more better jobs....   Money being printed we don't have?   Do you even know what you're talking about?
