TomatoPie
A topic for sharing memorable rock articles, or videos, or geographic formations. Not the ideal starter post but try to listen to this for 2 minutes or longer. You MUST get to the harmonies at 1:30

CHIP72
My first post in this thread - the roots of punk rock. Everyone who has heard the Stooges' first, self-titled album (originally released in 1969; you probably could have figured that out from the first video below) knows there are three standout songs on the album that are among the best (and I would argue, ARE the best) in the Stooges' canon of songs. The track numbers listed are the based on the order of the songs on the original album: Track 1: "1969" - never before or since has such a momentous year been turned into an ode to boredom Track 2: "I Wanna Be Your Dog" - perfect song if you are with your significant other and are in heat Track 4: "No Fun" - the Stooges' musical peak IMO, and contrary to the title, a lot of fun to listen to Even before the Stooges, there was primordial punk rock bubbling up. The English band the Troggs, best known for their big hit "Wild Thing", released an even more proto-punk type song a little later in 1966 that inspired the Stooges, the MC5 (a big brother band to the Stooges also from the greater Detroit area), the Ramones, and many other bands. The Troggs: "I Want You" - like "I Wanna Be Your Dog", this song's lyrics aren't subtle

Though my personal Iggy favorite is his cover of Tonight. Once took a trip to pick up my son, got lost (easy to do in Texas) and listened to Tonight over and over. Hauntingly beautiful.
wholesale_Melvin
been into furniture porn this past week as i came across an ad for a mid-century modern entertainment center the other day. as a graphics guy, that style makes for the sexiest pieces (all those straight lines etc). showed it to chickie. she clearly doesn't share my lust for lines but we have a spare bedroom and she has agreed to let me design/decorate in mid-modern by buying or building the pieces. long/end of it is, if this room (in my mind only currently) where to have a theme song, it would have to be this.... one of my all time favorite conversation pit jams. Is any band as polarizing as Steely Dan? I don't understand the haters unless they are simply maga anti-intellectual types. As much as I mourn the loss of Walter Becker, Fagen's solo work pretty much reveals that HE is Steely Dan. Becker/Fagan is not Lennon/McCartney.

Oh I got a reason to dislike Rush. That damn squalling banshee voice. It would be an interesting comparison to see which overblown 70s group makes me turn the station faster - Rush or SuperTramp. I get that Rush had some great musicians in the band, but wanky lyrics and that godawful voice are dealbreakers. YMMV Quote You realize that Jason Segel’s character’s obsession with Rush in I Love You Man is tongue in cheek, right? It’s often said that people either love Rush or hate them, but a more accurate statement is that most people hate Rush, while a scattered few really love them. Sort of like anchovies; in fact, it’s quite fair to call Rush the anchovies of rock music. Then there’s the fact that "drummer Neil Peart generally consents only to speak to the drum press,” a pantheon that includes in its entirety Modern Drummer and Not So Modern Drummer, if we’re not mistaken.
TomatoPie
OK, final hijack of my own thread - I don't agree with all of this (I love the Eagles, footballers and the band), but it's pretty hilarious and Dave Matthews is indeed the Worst Band: https://www.laweekly.com/top-20-worst-bands-of-all-time-the-complete-list/

From an article about Elliot Randall's guitar solo on Reeling in the Years As the story goes, this solo was so groundbreaking in the world of Rock & Roll Pop music, that when Eric Clapton first heard it, he was so "blown away” by it that he wanted to meet the man responsible for writing and playing this solo. That’s just how innovative it is.

TomatoPie
Bryan Ferry sooooooooooo underappreciated. He's a huge influence on both David Byrne of Talking Heads and Fred Schneider of the B52s.

Maybe Metallica (Tier 3 in history), but definitely up there for "currently putting out relevant music". Their buildups are too much of the same, even the new album. While the harmonies they come up with between the bass, guitar, and vocals are really good at the the peak of their beauty, I think we have just been starved for good rock for too long. The_Omega
I know that everyone likes to display the depth of their knowledge, and no one wants to be the first to bring up the obvious, so I’ll rip that bandaid right off. And yes, it’s a rip off, but it still don’t get no better
